Pyrepine

The Ultimate Kindling

When traveling the Paxroowa Forest, it is not uncommon to see rings of melted snow and exposed greenery. Lumberjacks know to avoid these places; these are groves of pyrepine. A curious property of the sap of the pyrepine causes it to ignite when it freezes. When fluid, the pyrepine oozes sap along its bark in a protective coating, attracting insects and trapping them for nutrients. The bark itself is fire resistant to a degree; though each ignition singes the tree, it also opens its pinecones to scatter seeds across the newly defrosted glade.

Economic Applications

The fire-resistant wood of the pyrepine has many uses in construction, enchantment, and experimentation. The most common use is to build important vaults. Past that, the aristocracy often pay fortunes to have their homes either lined or entirely made from it. There are two grades of pyrepine wood: raw wood, which is simple to process but only offers heat resistance up to 275° fahrenheit; and ritualized pyrewood, which can only be ignited by temperatures reached by dragonfire and in volcanoes. Kleebee Tinsong is the preeminent researcher concerning pyrepine wood, and developed the modern rituals by which it is reinforced.    Naruk is the largest exporter of pyrepine in the Gray Expanse, and it is the third largest economy in the country (after other logging and the export of astral ore).
