Astral Ore

Overview

Astral ore is a poorly understood material found in the soil of the Gray Expanse. It is an ashen, gray-purple metal that occurs naturally in clumps as shallow as a few feet beneath the earth. While the Jeweled Lands are almost completely devoid of the substance, the occasional lucky farmer close to the border of the Divide may come across one or two nuggets while tilling their fields. Wars have been fought over mining rights in the north, as any government with access to astral ore in abundance has an important bargaining chip economically, strategically, and even culturally. 

Properties

Metalworkers liken its unworked form to that of aluminum or gold, but skilled starsmiths - smiths that specialize in using astral ore - can make it harder than steel or more delicate than lace. This is thanks to its uncommon attunement with the weave of magic, granting it physical properties that can be altered by the desires of the smith.
