The Occidental Court

Though the Undercourt is based far away on the twin continents, their machinations have reached across the Cobalt Tides. On Sundercrag, the Occidental Court ensures that those truly fit to rule do so from the shadows, and the will of the Undercourt is preserved. Led by the Occidental Duke, the Occidental Court is fairly autonomous, though even they cannot ignore the instruction of the Underking.

The Occidental Duke. The Occidental Duke is the most powerful figure in the Sunderian branch of the Undercourt.

History

The Occidental Court is as cunning and ruthless as their eastern counterparts, but has a reputation for being far more brutal. This nature was exemplified shortly after the appointment of the most recent Occidental Duke. The Duke rose to his position after a number of other prominent undernobles suffered a series of accidents. At the Duke's inauguration, a minor noble who had too much to drink made the following comments:

The Occidental Duke? More like the Accidental Duke! Either he causes accidents or him being Duke is an accident...I bet if you asked his mother she'd say he was an accident too!

No retaliation was made until a month had passed when the noble was suddenly arrested and his assets seized. He was accused of committing a series of gruesome murders of young women from the slums – the evidence was airtight and he was quickly sentenced to life in Blacktomb Prison. His family name was ruined and his entire asset was turned over to the state. However, his misery did not end there. For whatever reason, as his prison carriage left the city it took a route through the slums, where an angry mob clamoring for his death were waiting. The carriage was surrounded and broken open, the mob pulling him from it and tearing him apart before parading his body around for the next few hours. The only comment the Occidental Duke ever made was, "What a terrible accident." None since have challenged the Occidental Duke, and none even dare utter the word "accident" in his presence.
