The Abyssal Wastes

Few is the human who is willing to trek out into the wastelands that encompass the territories between City-nations. Even fewer are those that would willing enter the blackened, blasted region known as the Abyssal Wastes. Filling what once was the central United States of America, from the old Rocky Mountains east to the Mississippi River.   This region of land is charred and bleak. A black, soot-like dust blows wildly in the wind, covering and corrupting everything it touches. What life isn't instantly drained by it is twisted and warped, and this dust is believed to be at least one of the sources of Darkspawn in the region.   Rumored to lie at it's center is the Devil's Cauldron, the largest collection of Black Wellsprings known to exist on the continent. It is from these tarry, oozing wellsprings that the Darkspawn are birthed, clawing their way to the surface before blindly searching for the nearest human settlement.   Between the black dust, wellsprings, and multitude of Darkspawn in the region the area is left well enough alone, effectively separating the East and West Coast City-nations. Information between the two is often old and outdated, if any comes through at all.

Fauna & Flora

The ecology of the Abyssal Wastes is a twisted mockery of what once roamed the land before the earth cracked and Black Wellsprings flowed up, releasing the Darkspawn into the world. Any life touched by the wellsprings' waters were either drained of life or twisted and corrupted into unholy abominations.   Neither plant nor animal were spared this fate. Those that were able to avoid the waters had to contend with not only these first of the Darkspawn, but the ones that came later from the waters.   Now the only "life", if it could be called that, in the region are the Darkspawn.
