Eala'nahmar

Also known as the City of Bridges, Eala'nahmar is a maulan majority city located between two mountain ranges in the east of the northern most island off of the Yldan mainland, by the river Nahmar (which itself means red river, named for the high amounts of clay that wash through it from further upstream).   Eala’nahmar is not only spread across both sides of the river, but also across its two main contributing branches. As a result, most of it is built up on raised platforms (some through magic) to mitigate the risk of flooding resulting in the network of bridges that give it its nickname. Eala’nahmar was originally founded by criminals (principally pirates and smugglers) and is still run by a collection of criminal guilds.

Government

Eala'nahmar is 'ruled' (if you can call it that) by an alliance of criminal guilds and factions, with the most powerful and influential being called the Founders (although not all of them are actual founders of the city, as it has become a title that has stuck even after some of the original founders have been overthrown/destroyed).   In practice, different parts of the city have their own rules, depending on who rules that part of the city but as a whole they don't tend to vary all that much from most similarly-sized cities, as despite being a city of criminals and thieves, most areas operate on some sort of "honour among thieves" mentality. The different areas do have their own quirks, some of which can be rather nasty to unsuspecting travllers, while others might just be a bit odd.   An example of the former is Eastbridge, whose Founder infamously taxes those wishing to marry in lieu of partaking of his 'right of first night', while an example of the latter is Claybottom, whose Founder has outlawed wearing the colour purple (as its her favourite colour and she only wants her and those associated with her using it).

Defences

Eala'nahmar has a few haphazard fortifications, mostly as a result of Founders who rule a particular area building them, however its principal form of defence is being surrounded by marshes, bogs, and other difficult terrain.

Infrastructure

As its name suggests Eala'nahmar is particularly known for and has numerous examples of bridges. This is out of neccessity, as much of the city is built near or over water.

Guilds and Factions

Eala'nahmar's political machinations mean that its various guilds and factions are constantly changing, although there are three particularly well known factions, each led not only by a Founder, but the only three remaining original Founders (or, in two of their cases, descendants of them).

Madame Midnight is the only true original Founder, being one of the oldest living alfur on Triumve, so old in fact that she lived through the World Floods, and she leads the Sisterhood who have a strangehold on prostitution throughout Eala'nahmar (and elsewhere, for that matter), although they generally treat it almost as a religious calling. They are the premier spellcasting faction, specialising in enchantments, illusions and counters to such magic.
