Vorian Courtship

Vorian courtship has two very different paths. For those that find love within their own Hive, Vorians encourage such couplings, and other arrangements, to florish. The courtship of such a couple is often very short, mostly because the partners are more than likely to already know each other rather well by the time that they are ready to start dating. Dating is a rather odd thing for Vorians as it entails each taking turns trying to woo the other into sexual acts. It is expected that aggressor to be as insistent as possible while the reciever to be as resistent as possible. The thought is that this tests the bond of the relationship.   Those who do not find love inside their own Hive have a much longer period of courtship, and a much less free one. If by their twentieth birthday, a Varian has not found love they must find it outside of the Hive. The leader of the Hive from which they were born, decides to send them to another hive. A unwed Varian is a sign of bad health to them and as such they are insistent on such pairings. Sent to a Hive of that they know nothing of save for the cultural simularities shared by all Varian, the young Varian is assigned a family to live with by the leader of the new Hive. Often this is because the leader has another Varian that they worry is nearing the age of departure. From there they are given a year to settle. Such additions to a family and Hive are always well treated. After a year if Courtship has not started on its own, the leader will either assign a partnership to the young Varian, or will find another Hive for which the young Varian can be sent to, though this option is not often taken. Assignments such as this are made with great care and the partner is a voulenteer even if the young Varian is not. Such courtships then start the game of wooing each other. However instead of taking turns it is the perspective partner that plays the agressor at each date. If by two years from then that the perspective partner has not managed to woo the young Varian, the young Varian will be assigned to an established but young family. Due to the biology of Vasps they will at this point likely be infertile and will act as a platonic partner to the other partners. Even in cases that go to such extremes there is rarely any interrelationship problems at that point. Sex is not forced, even if the game of dating is to earn it.   Varians are married on the birth of their first offspring, including in families of three or more. Until such time they are not considered married and no matter how successful a courtship may be it is accepted that both parties may look else where, if just because their biological clocks are ticking.
