Plain of Standing Stones
This region acted as the heartland of farming for the ancient Netheril empire. Fertile and vast, this region has endured a thousand years of desertification, only to be returned to fertile plains under the Empire of Shadow. Lacking that powerful influence, the lands are once again returning to the Anauroch.
Geography
The Anauroch is divided into three distinct areas, the central of which is the Plain of Standing Stones. Here the rivers of the Narrow Sea met with the rolling plains of central Netheril, carving out fertile farming lands. After ancient Netheril fell, the growing desert consumed these once fertile lands. The mostly waterless region of the Plain was full of gravel and jagged rocks, an area ravaged by powerful winds and almost devoid of trees. Very little of the region was actually flat plain; much of it rose up as a plateau over the sandy desert to the south. The winds had carved the stone into pillars, spikes, and other strange shapes, and it was full of cliffs, rifts, and rubble.
With the return of Netheril influence in the region circa 1372DR, this barren place once again saw renewed life for a time. The Bedine tribes of the region, under the influence of the Shadow Empire, worked to rebuild and occupy the Netheril cities of old. These places took on the old tropes of Low Netheril society, and supplemented the needs of the newly reestablished High Netheril of Thultanthar. Over the next 100 years the region renewed its fertility, once again empowered by the ancient arcane forces of the Netheril empire.
With the fall of the Shadow Empire looming in the near past, the Anauroch once again encroaches on the fertile lands of old Netheril.
Fauna & Flora
Herds of wild sheep and other animals may be found roaming the vast plains, chewing up the grassy turf that dominates this area. Sparse patches of trees and brush can be found around the dwindling river banks and pools that dot the landscape of the west. To the east, much of the grassy plains have fallen to the sands of the desert, playing home to scrappy pioneering species of little value.
