Ur'win City

The City of Might

A large coastal city, with stone walls surrounding it's boarder, Ur'win City is one of the larger cities within Eastmarch. Run by a council of representatives from each sector within the city limits. Ur'win's main purpose to the Emporor in Ar'ia is to recruit and train military soldiers and have them ready for the front. As a result of this, the head of the military in The Reach, Lo'thrien Talron, lives here, and sees over the operations as the head of the council. This City has a general sense of authority and military prowess with soldiers roaming the streets and an entire district of barracks dedicated to training and discipline. As a result of this, the city has adopted a strong mentality of physical improvement and hosts one of the largest arena tournaments in the country. People flock in every few months for this grand event and it attracts all the right crowd for Lo'thriens recruitment efforts. The city also tends to have a rougher attitude towards brawling and duels. Though laws are strict and within an instant guards will step in to de-escalate a bad situation. Even with the brawls and arena fights constantly going on, the high presence of military and guardsmen keeps this city safe. Some folks think that due to the rough nature of the fighting in taverns and streets means that the guards don't care and they could get away with other things usually considered criminal. These people are put to justice swiftly, because they are misinterpreting the situation. The guards are always watching intently and ready to jump into action when needed, though due to the nature of the town, duelling and fights are respected, until a law or honour has been broken.

Government

Run by a council of representatives that indicate the needs of the individual sectors of the city. The government is as close as it can be to a democracy with as many unanimous decisions as possible between the council members. However, some commoners are not represented in this way, and the people in the slums can most definitely fall between the cracks. The governmental council members are as follows;
  • Military Chief - Representing the Military and the ambassador to the Emperor - Lo'thrien Talron
  • Diamond District - Representing nobility - Lenolith Ar'iani
  • Lower Diamond District - Representing the upper class - Ander Brightwood
  • Guard District - Representing the guards and jailors - Gunter Stonejaw
  • Merchant District - Representing the merchants and craftsmen - Eldon Garrick
  • Docks - Representing the dockworkers - Yevelda
  • Harbour Master - Representing the harbour trade and foreign affairs - Chao Shin
  • Farming District - Representing the Farmers and Commonfolk - Bree Goodbarrel

Industry & Trade

The harbour allows for a large number of trading vessels to come through from Southshire and Al' Hakaar. A large portion of Ur'win's recruits also come through the harbour port. The industries within Ur'win have a vast variety. Just due to its size, there are plenty of different goods and services available. From blacksmiths and tanners, to magic shops and enchanters, Ur'win is a very large city and is capable of conducting volumes of craftsmanship and various services.

Infrastructure

The edge of Ur'win has large stone walls surrounding it's boarders, the streets are mostly cobblestone and well kept. Most of the homes are a combination of wood and stone. A large docks district harbours long docks for trading ships and military vessels. In the centre of town a massive Roman style Colosseum stands 100 ft tall made of large stone blocks. The Grand Ur'win Arena has large rows of seating surrounding a dirt pit with four pillars of stone in the centre, the Colosseum itself has a fantastic mechanism that allows for wooden slats to be extended above the Colosseum to either darken the arena for effect, or shelter the combatants and audience from adverse weather, allowing the arena to run all year long.

Guilds and Factions

Various guilds are present within Ur'win city as it is so large, it has most amenities available. A merchant's guild can be found in the market square, in addition to the Adventurer's guild near the barracks. One of the things that is note present in Ur'win is a thieves guild. The laws here, and military presence, prevent any such activities of black market endeavours and underground activities. Though this has not stopped people from trying, an official 'thieves guild' has not been founded.   Ur'win doen't neccesarily have clear divisions in faction status, however there is an underlying understanding about where you live and your social status within the city. Most 'factions' if they could be called that, have representatives on the council. Docks district, Diamond District, Barracks and the Slums are areas that are quickly and easily discernible as a different 'region' of town. But the majority of the city is a mix of common-folk and craftsmen with shops in-between. There is a large market square however that people set up booths and tables every day to sell there wares if they don't have access to a storefront.

Architecture

Many medival and roman themes are found in Ur'win with slight hints of Elven flourish. Stone structures with wooden slats a combination of both materials is used in most homes, taverns and workshops. The barracks is made of all stone and along the walls of the city large towers are laid forth every few hundred feet as lookout points for soldiers on patrol. The streets are 90% cobblestone, save the slum district, where mud and manure run through the streets. A very well constructed city overall, with organised streets and a well thought out layout.

Geography

Urwin is located on the coastline to the south, giving it access to a large harbour port. Surrounding it's other sides flows a large river and vast open fields and the occasional rolling hill. Trees sporatically dot the landscape with clusters of small forests near the rivers. A great place for farming and maintaining a proactive and constructive settlement.

Natural Resources

Plentiful in grains and crops, as well as livestock and fish, trees and areas with stone give the city a great pool of resources to gather from. However, Ur'win however lacks the capability to mine for metals. Therefor shipments from the northern mines are a necessity, and recently a contract was struck with Al Hakaar for gemstones and other fine minerals.

Facts on Ur'win City:

A Grand Arena Tournament is held on regular basis to help find skilled warriors and hone the skills of those already stationed. Many soldiers partake in the Arena to bolster their abilities and their pockets.   As a result of the heavy military presence, and the consistent fighting both in the arena and the streets, Ur'win is sometimes regarded to as an unsafe place, however anyone who's actually been here knows it's one of the safest places on the continent. Though brawls do happen often, it's only between two willing parties, and there are honour bound rules in place when fighting. This results in every brawl being heavily watched by guardsmen and military.   The law is taken very seriously in Ur'win and if a law is broken during a fight, it has been said that out of no where guards erupt from unexpected places, and stop things from getting out of hand.
