Wild Magic Syndrome
The Wild Magic Syndrom is a magical condition that can manifest seemingly randomly at an very early age. The affected have a high probability of becoming adventurers later in their life, provided they survive their formative years without a major incident either directly (e.g. Fireball centered on self) or indirectly (e.g. a witchhunt) related to their condition.
Causes
The Wild Magic Syndrome is caused either by an alteration of magically active bloodlines, like for example those of draconic heritage or it can happen when a women is subject to wild magic during the pregnacy. Other causes are currently unknown.
Symptoms
The Wild Magic Symptoms manifests as early as in toddlers, where it most often takes the form of random outbursts of sparks, smells and other harmless sensory effects. Later the child usually shows signs of magical capabilites, often spontaneous and uncontrollably at first. They may later develop into spell casters and learn to control the wild magic within them.
In rare cases wild magic surges can become violent and do lethal damage to the patient and an others in their vicinity.
Treatment
There is currently no known treatment short of a education in the arcane. However such an education is also known to make the surges more potent at times.
Affected Groups
The nobles of Westerrihar, Midalrihar and Inarrihar claim their descent from the dragons. This is supported by the occasional occurrence of a dragon blooded daughter, however for every 19 of those, there is 1 son or daughter that "suffers" from the Wild Magic Syndrome.
Cultural Reception
The nobles of the western realms pride themselves to be descendants of dragon, which forms the religious basis for their claim to rule. As such the presence of a child with the Wild Magic Syndrome is seen as a taint on the bloodline. Therefore it is not uncommon for those childs to be exiled from the family or even killed.
Within the general populace of these realms, such a child is a burden due to the unpredictable surges, but the reactions can range from fear to veneration depending on many factors.
The Moski generally see these children as a blessing and especially the more tribal societies the extended family pitches in together to raise and educate them.
