Lunar Divorce

The Lunar Divorce presents a possibility to women to get divorced without dependency on their husband.

History

The ritual has its roots in the mythical narration of Selunes repeated rejection of Pelor during solar eclipses. It started out as a secret congregation of women who celebrated Selunes persistence in her rejection. Later it became a celebration and announcement for women that left their husbands or rejected a marriage. Through the centuries it became more and more formalized until after the time of troubles it was decreed almost universially in the western realms that this ritual may not be performed at will, but only at days set by the priesthood of Selune. They decided to allow it at any day there is a visible solar eclipse anywhere in the world. In the eastern realms there is still no limitation, but it is most often held during a new moon.

Execution

The modern ritual is performed in the following way: Priestesses of Selune give a orations of Selunes rejection of Pelor in a public place at least once, but in larger citiies maybe more often that day. During the designated day, a women apporaches a priest or priestess of Selune and asks them to be blessed by the goddess for her future life. The priest ask her three times, if that is truly what she desires and if the confirms three times they bless her and announce that she has no longer any ties and obligations to her former husband. When there is a temple of Selune, they usually hold a feast for the divorced women and their friends in the evening. In areas without a temple, the divorcee and their friends are holding a feast and usually invite the priest that was involved.
