Adrigond

Not a particularly militarily or economically dominant kingdom, Adrigond is a notable kingdom for two primary reasons.   It is in essence, the 'Kingdom of the Elves'. While the Elves of Adrigond can trace their various lineages back to Orivador, the Darkwood, or perhaps even back to the Dagarlons or Heslon, none represent an autonomous political entity charged primarily with the protection and fostering of Elvendom like does Adrigond.   It is also notable because with possible exception of the Dwarven kingdom of Warku, there are no other demi-human political entities like Adrigond in all of the Northern Tor Lindon.

Structure

Adrigond is fundamentally made up of a collection of tribal clans.

Culture

Prior to the founding of Orivador, the Elves were very wild and generally enjoyed engaging with and nurturing a relationship with the elements and nature.   That instinct is still very prevalent within the Adrigondan society. The 'wild', sometimes viewed as 'savage' nature of the Elves looms large. Elves sometimes have closer bonds with the animals and flora they keep as companions than they do with other Elves, and certainly other races.   However since the founding of Adrigond, Elven eyes have been opened to what once may have been their heritage left by the Ancients and a glacially slow, often conflicting, always politically charged climb towards discovering that heritage has begun, with some few seeking to emulate their Ancient forebears rather than give in to their wilder impulses.

History

The Founding of Adrigond   The trek from Orivador to the Darkwood was easy enough, but looking for a place to lay a lasting foundation for the future was quite a different story. The Darkwood was named so not only because of its vastness, but also because it is almost completely untamed. Therefore it was decided to head to the southern region of the Darkwood where the surrounding populations were more dense and the forest more controlled. If the Elves were to claim part of the Darkwood as their own, it would be there.   Three of the twelve tribes, the Raven, Wolf and Blackhawk tribes, became so enamored of the Darkwood that they forewent their trek to found a new homeland and gave themselves to Darkwood. Few Elves would ever again see members of these Tribes, and imagined tales of what became of these Elves are told to young children to frighten them into behaving.   Indistil was well acquainted with the King of Heslon, Phillique the Golden and cultivated a deep friendship with him. From him he attained the assistance to wrest away a stretch of land from the petty baronies of what would soon come to be known as Finyadal. This land skirts the Darkwood and continues to provide arable land for agriculture. It is notable that the founding of Adrigond was done contrary to the wishes of Haver. It did not take long for sages and records keepers to pull out records on the War of Rage, and for the nobility to conjure up visions of the scheming Elves ready to once again do battle. Haver's protestations did not delay the work.   Finally, work began to construct Adrigond. Indistil envisioned a city that would rival Haver in majesty, and have no equal in beauty. Heslon was interested in helping, but the Formation Wars were taking their own toll. Some craftsmen and resources were supplied, but for the most part the Elves were forced to relearn many crafts and trades long neglected. The process was slow and tedious and taxed the patience of many Elves. However the Elves banded together with purpose and the fruits of their labors were seen as worthwhile.   In order to fund this development, the Elves managed to forge an agreement with the Darkwood Druids that allowed them to cultivate many items from the Darkwood. Given the rarity of these items, they fetched good prices and helped provide funds. The exact terms of the agreement with the Darkwood Druids is not known, but it seems that the Elves of Adrigond have since moved far beyond this agreement and have forged another with yet another unknown entity within the woods.   When Indistil envisioned the founding of Adrigond, it was with a clear plan in mind. Indistil desired strong leadership and considered himself well schooled in the matters of ancient Elven history. Indistil wanted to see a return to the Monarchial ways of old. To this end, Indistil was given the title of Prince. But when Adrigond took shape, the Elves that journeyed with Indistil from Orivador also saw the need for stronger leadership, but did not wish for a King. Not yet.   Instead they opted to appoint Indistil as Enyar, or Steward, of Adrigond. The positioned would serve as a symbol the Elven hope for a return to the greater glories of Old. When at last a King or Queen would ascend the Elven throne, the Elves could be assured that they had reached their goal.   While many High Elves are still members of tribes, the tribal structure has begun to erode in recent years with no clear successor. When Valnadil left and did not return he took the position of Enyar with him. To replace the Stewardship he crafted the Vanyen, essentially Council of Tribes to rule in his stead as he did not trust the ambitions and competencies of those about him. The Vanyen is made up of Vanya (Councilmembers), one from each of the tribes that made the journey from Orivador 800 years ago. There are also 3 empty seats to be claimed by the tribes with departed into the Darkwood and did not return. It was later phrophesied by Valnadil that it would be they that marked the return of the King of the Elves.   And so the groundwork was laid for Adrigond, now regarded as the Home for all High Elves, whereas Orivador is seen as the Home of the Wild Elves.
