Enderborn

She is the child of two worlds. One parent came from a place where darkness always reigns and a great Dragon guards her children. The other came from a world of sun and rain and plant life upon the ground. The circumstances of their meeting were strange, but love blossomed, and she is the product of their love. They can sense it already; great things are in store for her.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Enderborn have a seemingly random assortment of traits from both their human and their Ender ancestry. The genetic lottery can result in everything from a person who is barely distinguishable from a normal human, to a person who appears to have a patchwork of Ender and human body parts. Generally, the Enderborn child will look more like the parent that carried and gave birth to them.
Studying the expression of genes in Enderborn has led to the following consistent observations:
  • The body hair grows thick and dark, like Ender fur. Enderborn will have to shave more often than pureblood humans. Some Enderborn grow full patches of fur. To have the entire body covered by fur is rare.
  • The eyes are often purple, or have a strong purple tint. Bright green eyes are an extreme rarity, and only carry or express if the Ender parent also had green eyes.
  • Purple blood. An Enderborn will always have purple blood, no matter how humanoid they appear. This can result in human-passing Enderborn having a faint purple tinge.
  • They are rather tall. Most Enderborn will grow to be at least 1.8 m tall.
  • The arms and legs are slimmer. Having the slender frame, but lacking the bone density of a pureblood Ender, Enderborn are more liable to bone fractures.
  • Shorter, thicker fingers and toes.
  • The skin has a vitiligo-like pattern of Ender-black and human-brown patches. In some cases, the epidermis may be completely black or totally brown and not show signs of the other parents' skin tone.
  • Sharp teeth and/or extra rows of teeth.
  • A jaw that can open more widely than a normal human jaw.

Genetics and Reproduction

Enderborn can mate and have children like humans and Enders can. Their mixed traits are dominant over pureblood traits. Enderborn are genetically compatible with humans, Enders, and other Enderborn.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

As with physical characteristics, Enderborn inherit a mixture of their parents' abilities. The extra abilities and limitations of Enders are subdued by the presence of human genetics. In other words, Enderborn often can teleport, but not as well as pureblood Enders, and water only hurts them after prolonged exposure. In rare cases, the Enderborn may inherit all the benefits and none of the drawbacks of being half-Ender, or all of the drawbacks and none of the benefits.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

Enderborn tend to have names that are a mix of Ender and human names.

History

It is not known when Enderborn first began to appear among humans and Enders. However, the case is most likely that it happened early on. The prevailing theory is that the Enderborn race began when populations of humans converged with their local Ender hauntings.
Their ancestry and odd appearance has given Enderborn a complicated reputation. Among Enders, especially High Enders living in the End, they may be shunned as the products of an "unclean" union. Humans have a long and sordid history of casting out Enderborn as "mutts" and "freaks." This exclusionary behaviour prompted many Enderborn to leave the mainstream of society and form their own communities. The most notable of these is Rivermouth, where they along with Mixedagers established a safe zone for those with mixed ancestry.
Attitudes towards Enderborn began to change around the Medieval period, because of a certain individual. One of the most famous Enderborn is King Peter the Dragon-Hearted. His fame and grandeur helped to reduce the stigma. Today, in major cities, Enderborn live alongside pureblood humans and Enders with little conflict.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Naturally, Enderborn are intimately connected with their parent races. Many areas with converging Ender and human populations will foster a healthy demographic of Enderborn. Relationships between the races are not frowned on, except by some older and stuck-in-their-ways individuals.
