Ender

For all their life, the only sky they have known is one dark and cold, with no sun and no moon. The starry expanse stretches over a continent of white stone and alien trees, suspended in an infinite void. There is no direction and no time here, yet despite these limitations, their noble race has carved out a civilisation. White and purple pagodas rise into the starry void of a sky. The chorus fruit trees have been tended into orchards. Boats and ships sail through the air, suspended on nothing more than faith and a bit of a magic. For that is what courses through the body of each Ender individual -- a curious sort of magic.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Enders are usually 3 metres (~9 ft) tall, with long, thin limbs. Their entire body is covered in a short layer of black fur, which has a velvet texture. The skin underneath is bluish-black -- despite the low light condition they live in, Enders have a lot of melanin in their skin and hair. They have large eyes with a tapidum lucium -- most Enders have purple eyes, but rarely they can be born with green eyes. Enders have large and flexible jaws, which can open at a very wide angles. Inside their mouths, they have several rows of hooked teeth. Their bodily fluids are oil-based instead of water-based. Enders have an internal organ called an Ender-pearl, which allows them to teleport. Their hands and feet resemble paws more than human hands or feet -- an Ender's paw-hand has three fingers and a thumb, each digit having two knuckles. Instead of fingernails or toenails, they have retractable claws. The underside of their hands and feet have leathery pads for ease of gripping things. Enders have two small protrusions on the sides of their skulls. which may be the remains of vestigial horns.
There is little to no sexual dimorphism in Enders, because they are all biologically intersex.
Enders have a lower body temperature than humans -- around 33 to 34 degrees Celsius.

Genetics and Reproduction

All Enders, regardless of gender or gender expression, are biologically intersex. Save for birth defects or injuries, every Ender will have both a "male" and a "female" reproductive system. That means that any mature Ender can mate and have offspring with any other mature Ender. Enders mate and bear children in a similar manner to humans. Ender pregnancy is 9 months, the same as human pregnancy.
Enders are genetically compatible with humans and can have children with them. A half-Ender, half-human individual is called an Enderborn. The child will generally look more like the parent that carried and birthed them. Enders that become pregnant with half-human babies will often fall ill because of it, which is uncomfortable for them but not fatal.

Growth Rate & Stages

The average Ender lifespan is 120 to 200 years. A particularly healthy individual may life as long as 220 years.
From birth, baby Enders have strong paws and an equally strong gripping instinct. Their parents or caregivers will carry them on their backs to free up their hands. The claws on a baby do not sharpen until adolescence, meaning that it does not hurt an adult Ender (or even a human) to carry a young Ender on their back.
Infant Enders cannot teleport -- that ability does not develop until childhood, and is not quite perfected until adolescence. While initially helpless and totally dependent on caregivers, young Enders learn to feed themselves, walk, and talk faster than baby humans.
Enders reach maturity at 20 years old or so. Many will begin seeking a mate/spouse at that age.

Ecology and Habitats

Because of their weakness to water, Enders will avoid places which rain or do not have sufficient shelter from rain. In the Overworld, they like deserts and savannah best of all, because it does not rain in those environments. They also like roofed forests because of the shade and copious tree canopy. However, they are also not fond of extreme heat unless they have adjusted to it first. Their dark fur tends to absorb light and make them uncomfortably warm.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Enders require a lot of energy to teleport. Because of this, they prefer high-calorie food, especially in carbohydrate form. In their native dimension, chorus fruit fulfills all their dietary needs, including water-free hydration. Enders are not inclined to hunt animals for food, and will seek plant food in the Overworld when hungry. They enjoy the taste of sugar, but avoid food that has a high water content.

Biological Cycle

If living in a cold climate, an Ender's fur will grow slightly thicker to insulate heat.
They can reflexively teleport to avoid environmental hazards like water, fire, and projectiles launched at them.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Enders group into cities on a macro scale. The family unit is composed of two mated/paw-fasted* Enders, their children if they have any, and other dependents. Enders frequently adopt loners, widow(er)s, orphans, and aging parents into their families.
*wherein two Enders are mated for life. Paw-fasting is analogous to the human rite of marriage.

Uses, Products & Exploitation

In olden times, Enders were hunted for their pearls, which can be thrown for teleportation. This is seen as murder in modern times, but that does not stop some amoral individuals from slaying Enders for their pearls.

Average Intelligence

Enders are extremely intelligent, perhaps even moreso than humans. Because of their high intelligence, they are fast learners. This helps them pick up languages and behaviors from other sapient beings quickly.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Enders have the following senses: Sight, Sound, Smell, Taste, Tactile Touch, Kinesthesis, and Aura. They are capable of teleporting small distances at will. They have a heightened ability to sense the emotions of other sapient beings.
Physical contact with liquid water harms Enders. It chemically burns their bodies. Gaseous and solid water does not seem to harm them.

Symbiotic and Parasitic organisms

The fur and skin of Enders can become infested with a louse-like creature called an endermite. The mite feeds on their dead skin and blood, causing intense itching and occasionally allergic reactions. The mites sometimes fall off during teleportation, whereupon they will scuttle around in search of another host.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

Enders usually name themselves and their children according to their own Ender language. Overworld dwellers may use names from other languages, albeit often modified to fit their native tongue.

Beauty Ideals

Height is seen as very attractive among Enders, as are bright eyes and strong teleportation abilities. Emotional sensitivity and intelligence are highly valued as well. Enders that can speak multiple languages, especially those from other sapient races, are seen as quite "sexy" among their kin.

Gender Ideals

Enders have an interesting relationship with gender and its expression. Although all of them are biologically intersex, they will slide into a gender presentation upon adolescence. They may express themselves as male, female, or androgynous. They use mannerisms, vocal tones, and clothing to present as their gender.

Major Language Groups and Dialects

All Enders speak their own language, called Ender. It has three dialects, based on the three dimensions in which Enders live: High, Middle, and Low.
High Ender is spoken by Enders who live in their native End dimension. Because little changes in the End, it is a rather static language uninfluenced by outside factors. It tends to sound old-fashioned compared to other dialects, which have had time to evolve.
Enders who live in the Overworld speak Low Ender. It has a lot of influence from Common and Testif. It also has more slang and neologisms than High Ender. Linguists describe it as sounding very "earthy" compared to other dialects of Ender.
Middle Ender emerged among Enders living in the Nether. It is a creole of High Ender and Nethertongue. Supposedly, it has a "gruff" tone compared to the High or Low dialects.
Enders can learn other languages easily, which is why most Overworld Enders speak fluent Common. They do have a thick accent and struggle to pronounce some sounds -- most noticeably, phonemes like /p/, /b/, /th/, and so on. They will often avoid words with problem sounds, leading to odd speech patterns.

Common Etiquette Rules

One must never make sustained, direct eye contact with an Ender. It is interpreted as a challenge and a rude gesture. Eye contact is only permitted between close friends, family, and lovers.
For the sake of accuracy, it is preferred that you refer to them as "Enders," not "Endermen" or "Enderwomen." Those are considered outdated and needlessly gendered terms.

Common Dress Code

Like humans, Enders wear clothes. They have a sense of nudity and think of it as socially inappropriate, too. At the very least, the crotch must be covered to be considered "decent." They favor loose construction, soft fabrics, simple styles, and neutral colours in their clothes. They wear a lot of robes, dresses, and cloaks. Dark colours and angled cuts are considered feminine, while lighter colours and straight cuts are thought of as masculine.

Common Customs, Traditions and Rituals

Baring the Ender pearl -- which can be removed from the body and remains connected by a trail of energy -- is the gesture of utmost intimacy and trust among Enders. This is their moment of greatest vulnerability, so it must be taken very solemnly. It is reserved for one's spouse and the closest of treasured friends.
Enders mate for life, joining in a ritual called "paw-fasting." It is analogous to the human rite of marriage. The Ender term for "spouse" literally translates to "pearl-mate," referencing the aforementioned baring of the pearl and its intimate meaning.

Common Taboos

Sustained, direct eye contact
Cheating on one's pearlmate
Yelling at or being aggressive towards children, the elderly, sick people, or disabled people.
Spitting at others
Speaking ill of the Ender Dragon or Ses'ser

History

According to legend, Diamond Age Enders were much more draconic, taking after their Over-Mother. They were even taller than they are now, with horns and perhaps even wings. These Old Enders were very strong, being able to punch through metal and tear apart stone with their bare paws. Humans, fearing for their life against these mighty beings, began to hunt them, but it was not easy. It took a group of several strong men to bring down even a single Old Ender, and even then one could expect a couple men to die in the encounter. The humans fought a losing war with the Old Enders and were nearly destroyed by them. Ses'ser, seeing the danger and warned by the other gods, mournfully wiped out the aggressive Old Enders. Only the gentle ones survived to evolve into the Enders known today. Or at least, that's what the myths and legends say. The fossil record may say something different.

Common Myths and Legends

Among the High Enders of the End dimension, most myths tell of their Dragon and their patron god, Ses'ser. Their version of the creation story is that the End was created before the Overworld, with the latter being an afterthought. According to them, the End is a hunk of space rock that was molded by Ses'ser's hands and he breathed life into every pore and speck of dust in it.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

In most cases, Enders will maintain respectful relationships with other sapient races as long as their rules of courtesy are observed. They view the killing of humans, testificates, and piglins as murder, just as the slaying of their fellow Enders is murder.
Enders have been known to fall in love, marry, and have children with humans. This usually happens in areas where hauntings live close to peaceful human civilisations and have for some time.
They do not practise item trading with other species, so they have a limited relationship with testificates and piglins. The interspecies relationship there is mostly neutral.
