Portal

A portal is a magical connection between two different locations. These locations can be in the same world or in different worlds, and at the same or different time periods. Portals allow people and objects to cross instantaneously between the two portal mouths in either direction. Portal stones are used to create the portal mouths. The portal stones provide mass to the portal mouths, and limit the amount of mass that can pass through the portal before it collapses. Portals require a good deal of coordination to create and operate, and are thus not a very common method of transportation. The main use of portals is the permanent portals connecting the largest cities across Bredainnă, located at their portal hubs.

Effect

Portals connect two different locations, to allow for instantaneous travel between the two. However, portals cannot be used to carry mass from one place to another (see conservation laws). The mass that goes through a portal mouth contributes to the mouth's mass, and thus to the mass of the portal stone created from it when it closes. Similarly, the mass that comes out of a portal mouth subtracts from the mass of the mouth, which ultimately comes from the mass of the portal stone used to make it.

Manifestation

A portal mouth appears as a disk through which one can see the other location, with the two images warping and blurring into one at the edges.
