Explorer's Log

Purpose

"A savvy explorer never leaves for an adventure without some way of recording the details. You always think you'll remember everything until you're overwhelmed by the foreign harshness of literally the entire world beyond the Shield Mounts." --Retired Explorer Rand Belmont.
A traveler's log is a compendium of materials need to survive long voyages into the Borderlands and the Wastes and to record the explorers observations along the way. It is a hide-bound briefcase--the hide can be leather, dragon hide, or any other durable and heat resistant material. Inside the briefcase is a set of pre-made or self inscribed projection crystals, a projector that could be fitted with a candle, a candle, matches, and waxed notebook and pencils. The wax is very thin, meant to repel water from water susceptible pages but not thick enough to melt together in the heat of surface travel. Because of this, only pencils can be used to write in the notebook, not ink. The crystals are coated in a clear resin to prevent scratching and can hold several books worth of information. The information is accessed through a projector and lens type set-up. Kind of like a phonograph but for the written word rather than audio. Crystals cannot be written on in the field as they require a special set of tools and equipment for inscription. However, they can be pre-inscribed with helpful information before the journey, allowing for lots of information to go on the venture in very little space.

Historical Details

History

One of the struggles early Piromese explorers faced was the lack of writing materials in the Borderlands and the Wastes. Because the Numab are fairly centered around oral traditions, they have not created writing materials at scale. Therefore, early explorers would have to bring large journals or volumes with them on their voyages. This would result in many heavy chests of notes being lugged back and forth. With the invention of the crystal inscription technology, those reference notes could be reduced down to several crystals. This also meant that they were less likely to get damaged in transit. The notebook was designed to withstand water and heat damage, but is not totally immune. However, this design has become the standard kit for any would be explorer leaving the comforts of Piromere for the "rough and tumble" lifestyle of the Borderlands and the Wastes.
