The Chamber situation is quickly becoming critical. In trying to enlist the help of the Archive to solve his population control issues, King Leatham was forced to reveal the origin of the control to begin with. While this was a great victory for us, it is also one of the more disturbing pieces of information I am have ever uncovered. It seems that when the Bleak Night occurred, there was a scientific experiment running in the particle accelerator buried in the mountain. When the orbital assets hit, the experiment went wild and tore open a small rift into some other plane of existence. Worse, things came through. Beings of pure energy unable to fully manifest in this plane. While apparently immortal, when they are here they required sustenance, which they could not find and consumed one another until the first humans drifted into the mountains after the war. It seems that these beings are capable of sustaining themselves on the emotional energy of humans. Not knowing what was happening, humans abandoned the mountains as cursed until a nomad king led a band of followers into the mountains, determined to cleanse them of the ghosts that haunted them. The official story we knew already. The king drove them into submission and he and his followers founded what eventually became Chamber, although the peasants here still think it is partially haunted even now. The truth was darker. The beings attempted to contact the king, but were only able to bombard him with images and emotions that nearly drove him mad before he figured out what was happening. They were offering a truce. After nearly a month of negotiation, the king hit upon a deal. He would bring his tribe here, settle in among the ruins of the Spine, and build a safe haven from the wastes they were so tired of dying in. This would allow the beings to feed off a greater number of people, meaning they would not have to drink too deep, as it were, and they could stay hidden. The king also discovered that the beings could target which emotions they drained...and he asked them to eat anger, hate, and every emotion that would lead a people to rebel. So it was that Chamber came into being. A place where the population can't rebel despite being worked to death because all they know is tiredness and happiness.
The problem is that the population of Chamber has expanded to much. The beings are full and cannot eat more, so people over the last generation have begun to understand their situation. The fires of rebellion are burning, sabotage is becoming commonplace, and the people are beginning to strain at their leash. The people still don't know about the “Others” as King Leatham has taken to calling the beings, but the ghost stories they tell are near to the mark. If you take the time to read Adept Trevall's assessment of the local folklore of Chamber, you will see that much. The King has discussed this problem with the Others, and their simple solution was to use the accelerator to simply tear another hole open and let more their kind in. This would allow the King to keep his population quiet at the cost of letting more of an unknown alien intelligence into our world. I advised strongly against this, but the alternatives are scarcely better. One solution discussed were letting the rebellion happen and simply be ready for it, letting the war reduce the numbers in Chamber until the Others that are here can keep the remaining population quiet. Another was unleashing a tailored plague they have a cure for cull their people to a number that can be controlled again. The time the King has to choose a solution is running short. I told the King that I would return to the Archive to seek information to help him, but I know that this is going to boil over before I am able to return. I suggest we simply get ready to assist Chamber if the King decides to murder his own subjects by providing relief and supplies after the fact, hopefully paving the way to completing our mission of establishing a permanent abbey here. If the King chooses to let more the Others in...then maybe it will be time to let these people know the truth. As always, I leave those decisions to you, my Archon, and the Lords of Logic.
Finally, I have my initial assessment of Adept Trevall ready. He seems fully vested in his chosen vocation of Chronicler, and seems to have no memory of either his former life or his time as a War Simulacrum. All in all, a success story. Trevall is eager to learn about people and seems to have an interest in the folklore and mythology that societies build to educate and protect themselves. I am going to keep him under my wing awhile longer, with your permission of course, to hopefully guide his training into intelligence gathering and asymmetrical warfare with a focus on the information and psychological side of things. Another couple decades or so could turn him into a real asset for the Archive.
