Azrael - Archangel of Death and Soul | Thicket of Thorns

Azrael

Archangel of Death & Soul

Azrael was created before the world and they will be there to see to its end. Everything ends eventually, and Azrael is the Archangel tasked with seeing to every death and the progression of every soul. This is an enormous task, and Azrael has an astonishing insight into the nature of souls and the shift from living to dead. They also have no time for anyone who opposes this most natural part of the world and will destroy those who would desecrate death.   To some, Azrael is frightful to behold — a towering symbol of death, surrounded by the dark halo of their many wings. Those who fear their life coming to an end are likely terrified of this Archangel, while others find comfort in knowing that even the end and the path their soul will take thereafter are guided by an angelic presence.

The End

Some say that Azrael's mission is not just the death of every individual in every world, but also the death of reality itself. They have seen how the world will end and will make sure this prophecy happens as intended. If this is true, it might explain some of Azrael's stranger choices from time to time.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Azrael appears as a giant robed figure, framed by a dark halo and a multitude of wings. Around them are many smaller spectral eyes that are each watching a soul somewhere in the world. Ghost-like shapes swirl around Azrael, moving with the strength of their voice.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Azrael provided some of the raw material for creating the new life during The Eden Experiment, symbolising their grasp of the separation of body and soul.   For most of history, Azrael has instructed their angels to keep hidden, even more so than other angels. Their job hasn't always been appreciated. For instance, some Jewish traditions claim that the Archangel is evil.

Intellectual Characteristics

Every thought and every word by Azrael carries the full weight of death itself. They know that they are the final word. As such, they are able to foresee anyone's death and understand the path of every soul. As much information this is, they are far from omniscient which makes them cautious so as to not disturb anyone's destiny.

Morality & Philosophy

More than any other Archangel, Azrael is concerned with the ultimate paths taken by individual souls. Those of their angels not instructed to handle matters concerned directly with death are instead directed to fill positions such as teachers or counsellors in order to help individuals make choices that will eventually bring their soul to Heaven or at least not to Hell. This way, Azrael can keep an eye on every soul from beginning to end.

Social

Contacts & Relations

Amongst The Host, Azrael sometimes has a hard time relating to those with the most concrete applications relevant in life, such as Anael and Elijah. They have much more in common with Cassiel and Zadkiel.   Outside the Host, the most complex relationship Azrael has is the one with Osiris. The Aeon represents death in its purest form and rules the Land of the Dead. The two complete each other as Azrael's duties are to the path the soul takes, and specifically in so far as the Divine is concerned, not to the event of death itself. They are rivals in that they sometimes disagree on how a soul should travel once it has left its body behind. Azreal doesn't want it to stay anywhere but its final destination (preferably Heaven or Hell), while Osiris sees many different outcomes and not all of them permanent.
