Session 1: Mysterious Mask Report

General Summary

Met in the The Dragon's Flagon, played some lute and pan flute, read the symbols on the back of the funeral mask and found the name Khea, who turned out to be a local pharmacist who runs a small apothecary at the North end of Meletis. She grumpily helped the party decipher some of the symbols on the back of the mask, which read,
"Hid from eyes of mortals and gods
Lies wither in Orestes’s rot."

She told the party that the Khystonos River has recently dried up and exposed odd stones that might be the opening to the Court of Orestes, the legendary tomb of one of Phenax's earliest followers.
The party also mentioned they found the mask on the body of a Returned supposedly named Varyas, which is the name of a local Phenax follower and playwright, who had long been bothering Khea after she wrote a scathing review of his book, The Satyr's Half-Horn, a lude comedy he hoped would be played in the Phenaxicus Theatre. Gwendolyn got suspicious of Khea at this point and attempted to unalive her, but was stopped by the party and ushered out onto the street, where she continued to cause a scene before the party rushed out of the city instead of facing the guard's inquiries.

Along the path to the location Khea pointed out to them, they came across the Pool of Lyth, a pool of hallucinogenic water occupied by three Harpies claiming to be oracles of the water's dreams. After Gwendolyn drank from the water and was seemingly incapacitated, the Harpies attacked the party and were dispatched with a few casualties in the party. The gang camped out and left the next morning.

As they continued North, the forest gave way to RockyTM hillsides and they adventurers ran into a broken Minotaur claiming to be the king of a long-off land in search for an heir after he was cursed by Mogis for attempting to pass the kingdom to his sickly son. The king was using an amphora he found as a test to determine who was worthy of his kingdom. Kevin and Dan failed his test, sparking his anger. Dan profaned the god of violence Mogis and threatened to smash the amphora, which seemed to anger the god and cause a thunderstorm overhead. Using this to their advantage, the team scared the crazed Minotaur into avoiding a battle and separating from them instead.

The next day, the party found the burial site and fought an amphisbaena that had taken residence in the mud outside the stone entrance. They entered the dark dungeon and found muddy hallways pooled with water. Gwendolyn, for reasons unknown sees detailed artwork depicting Orestes's feats over his lifetime where the rest of the team just sees mud-covered walls and floors. Sevaros sneaked ahead while the rest of the team donned the masks of Phenax they had found, which fooled the Triton Returned guards that were wondering one of the burial chambers. In a deeper room, Sevaros picked a lock to a sarcophagus chamber and spotted a secret door that had been propped open. Beyond the door was a large sarcophagus with a huge statue looming over it and a pit of mud at its feet. Next to the pit was a Lampad, a nymph from the Tartyx River.
