Rumor has it the Path of Phenax involves crossing thie river to escape the underworld without the aid of the River Guide, causing a split of mind and body. The body becomes a grey-fleshed featureless Returned, while the mind becomes a confused jumble of emotions, memories and personality known as an Eidolon.
