Mortal Life

Orphaned as a child, Alexus grew in the care of the monks of the monastery of the cranes. There he learned patience, temperance, and all virtues the monks held dear. But when the young human stepped out into the world, he found it to be more cruel than he had ever imagined. Rather than let himself be bent and twisted by the world, Alexus stood tall and held against the tide.

Alexus staked a claim over Western Heigarth, and fought against incursions on their domain. In time, the Crane God’s legend spread, and many sought refuge within the monastery's walls. Anyone willing to work for the good was accepted, and Alexus took them all in, like a crane spreading its wing over its chicks.

In EU 4, the the queen of Heigarth informed Alexus that two people who had sought refuge in his temple were in fact wanted criminals, and demanded that they be released into government custody for trial. Alexus unconditionally refused to release anyone he took in. Everyone was to be given a second chance to redeem themselves, but Alexus and his faithful laid down rules for those seeking asylum: anyone can live in the monastery and do penance, unless they take advantage of the faithful who live and work there.

Irritated by Heigarth's tendency to simply throw away anyone who breaks a law, Alexus pushed for the creation of rehabilitation centers designed to integrate offenders (as well as addicts of all kinds) back into society as productive members. To this day, such rehabilitation centers often bear the insignia of a crane or crane feather, as an homage to their inspiration.
