The Thorocita people, as the adults have the ability to change color at will. Normally, when someone has something special in their life like a relative(past or present), or a role that they played, a promise, or a memory that is significant, a lesson, then the person would use their color changing abilities to make an "artificial tattoo" on their skin to remember that intangible thing that is important.
