Jotun

The Jotun is a moniker that encompasses the many varied species of giants native to the northern reaches of Thea, combining them all into a semi-cohesive society. The majority demographic is split among the six primary giant races, with the remainder comprising of various hybrids and rare variants.   The seat of culture and society, as well as the kingdom with he highest population of giants, is the northern principality of Jotunheim. Set north of the Western Spine Mountains, directly across from the elven kingdom of Tarminas, it is one of the largest nations of the modern era by land area, though its population density is significantly lower than its neighbors.   In recent years, the Jotun practice of intricately carving whale bone spear heads with which to use on hunting expeditions has sparked an interest in some members of the nobility of the southern nations. The slow and methodical act of carving is seen as therapeutic and reminiscent of a more pastoral lifestyle to those of the political spheres. A divergence in styles from the traditional began in the southern nations only a few years ago where the design of the carving is carved in such a was as that when the blood of a hunted animal is allowed to dry in the cracks and valleys, it provides a more striking and dynamic final work. Some merchants who work the routs into Jotunheim say that some of the giants have taken to carving in this style.

Ideals

Courtship Ideals

Courtship can be initiated by either side of the relationship, generally through the giving of a grandiose or extraordinary gift. Traditionally, males would give something resulting from one of their hunts, or raids, to show their strength, while the female partner would produce some form of craft to display their creativity. Though these gender roles are commonly followed, it is not unheard of for a Jotun to produce something of exceptional quality, but traditionally unbefitting their station. One notable example was the previous Jotun High Chief, Grehal Ofwhait, who, as his proposal gift, stitched his future wife's lace bridal trail from lightweight thread, all 150 feet.
