The Borderlands

A horse rancher surveys his land, horses grazing or running across the fields. A faint smile of pride touches his mouth at the sight of the animals, some of the best Illithea has to offer and the reason the man is able to live a life of relative comfort.   A family huddles together for warmth, the children and women together while the men sit with their pipes near the meagre fire. The men talk in low voices about their oppressors in the north and lament the most recent failed uprising. The women cover the children's ears at the complaints; innocently repeating the conversation of one's parents in the hearing of the wrong person could cause serious problems for the family.   A young man and woman take each other's hands as they cross the border and leave their home forever. Newlyweds searching for a better, freer life, they decided to leave in the dark of night and flee to Nerraniel. The journey will be long and hard, and they have not brought enough supplies; the worry in the woman's eyes betray her calm demeanor.   The Northmen took over the Borderlands in order to provide horses for transport and other crops for food; the ground in the north is too cold for more than basic root vegetables, and the Borderlands provide a meagre quality of food but in plentiful supply. The people here are angry and bitter, wishing for freedom but unable to see how they will gain it. Frequent uprisings followed by harsh punishments do nothing to ease people's anger.

Geography

Hills dominate the Borderlands, as the continent moves up towards the mountainous regions. Lakes and rivers are common and people tend to live in villages and ranches near these waterworks, to save time and money on obtaining water.   Huge stretches of grassland form a large part of the region, and this forms most of the farm and ranch land used by the region's inhabitants.   Cool temperatures and gentle sunshine are the norm in the Borderlands. The land is nowhere near as frozen as in the North, but it is poor and not very suitable for farming except along the border with the Hinterlands. What the land is good for, however, is horses.   The Borderlands are prone to heavy rainfall throughout the year, although this lessens in the winter when it is comparatively dry but very cold with occasional snowstorms.   Storms are common, especially after periods of uncharacteristic heat.

Fauna & Flora

Heavy on grasslands and with some forested areas especially in the north, the Borderlands are very pretty. Flowers and plants are abundant and the farms that are present tend to grow wheat and vegetables.   The main animal to be seen in the Borderlands is horses; the horses almost outnumber the people. There are also domesticated sheep and cows, dogs and cats, and assorted wild small animals.
