Home of Last Hope

Overview

After the sporeal outbreak in 129 and the appearance of the first Spirit Sapped individual, a need for the Home of Last Hope was realised. Many considered the afflicted to be beyond help and hope and very few people wanted anything to do with them. Scared that they would catch it and lose their magical powers as well. This led to the afflicted to be shunned from society and forgotten about until in 133 when Demeria Vestin set up the Home of Last Hope. A place where she and her staff tried their hardest to heal the afflicted and, if that failed, give them somewhere safe and welcoming to spend the rest of their days.

History

Born with a clear lack of magical aptitude Demeria Vestin spent most of her life in her older sister’s shadow, who had been born with a powerful arcane talent. She ended up being her sister’s attendant while she focused on more important magical matters. That was until her sister became Spirit Sapped and lost all her magical future. She was aghast at the treatment her sister received after being such a shining light in the magical community. They ignored her, then shunned her and after that expelled her and all other afflicted from the city. Demeria followed her sister into this imposed exile from their home because partly because she loved her sister, and partly because she didn’t know where else to go.   After years of travelling from place to place, trying to find somewhere that would take them in, her sister lost hope. So did the rest of the afflicted that they travelled with. All previously powerful magic users that had lost their powers.   The idea for the hospice to help them came to her one night in her sleep. Enamoured with the s when she was younger, she had wished to become one someday. Now she saw a way she could help her sister and fulfill her childhood dream.   The Home of Last Hope started small, just a place where they could stay and be safe from the outside world. It then expanded into somewhere they could investigate the illness and try to reverse the effects. Over time, others came to join them, some afflicted after hearing of a place they would be welcome and safe, and some people equally disgusted at their treatment and wanted to help.   After a few years, they had large buildings housing many afflicted magic users and a vast building full of experiments and researchers. However, nothing they tried ever had any lasting effect and for most of the afflicted people, it ended up being the place they came to die. It was because of this last hope for a cure that the hospice got its name.   It wasnt until the year 310 that a cure for the condition was found in the form of Magioclastia, sadly many years after the death of Demeria and her sister. A statue of them both still stands in the courtyard, immortalising their struggle to help all they could.
