Selkie

These creatures spend most of their time in the ocean, in their seal form. Sometimes, though, they like to take on human form to walk on land and, in some cases, interact with humans. So long as they can keep their sealskin safe, they will always be able to return to the ocean.

Additional Information

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Selkies live wherever there are seals. Unless, perhaps, all the seals in a given location are selkies- but there is no way to know for sure unless they choose to take human form and are seen doing so.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

They are able to change between seal and human form by use of their sealskin. To turn from seal to human, they take off their skin. To turn from human to seal, they put it back on again.   If someone were to separate them from their skin, they would be unable to return to their seal form until they can retrieve their skin. And if they remain separated from their skin for too long, they begin to forget what they are. Only the return of their skin can reverse this.

Civilization and Culture

Major Language Groups and Dialects

They share a dialect with other magical creatures, which comes through more or less thickly depending on their fluency with human dialects and depending on who they're speaking with. This dialect, while shared, does tend to vary across different kinds of magical creatures, and selkies are no exception in having some of their own unique linguistic features. Selkies and other magical beings that live mainly in the ocean tend to speak what is considered a more standard form of the dialect, as it is seen as the one that all others originate from.
