The Free State of Lentaine
In the harsh rolling plains of Lentaine resides the loosely organized Free State of Lentaine, a coalition of far flung towns, villages, and farmsteads which have agreed to band together in defense and in the hope of prosperity.
Structure
Due to the scant population of Lentaine, and the large distances between settlements, the state is still mainly run on a local level. The mayors and lords of each settlement meet biyearly between the hot and cold season to share news, decide tax law, and debate over the governance of the realm. The Lord of Lenville, the most populous central town, is considered by most to be the de facto leader of Lentaine, but in reality it is a council of leaders which are in control.
Assets
Lentaine is currently capable of fielding roughly 3,000 foot soldiers from it's farmer population. It also maintains a dedicated calvary of 500 capable horsemen.
Lentaine's main export is potatoes. There are small amounts of other more exotic crops grown, but the farms are mainly for local subsistence as winter and climate is harsh in Lentaine.
History
Lentaine has been a poisoned land longer than any record can tell. It has been home to a rare few, mostly those in hiding, until a migration occurred beginning in 578 as some people in Mansguard fled the disastrously bloody war with the dwarves. These early pioneers painstakingly worked the few patches of good soil, and the region has slowly grown ever since.
A group that came to be known as The Riders of The Spit arrived roughly around 590 and roamed the countryside as a nomadic horse-bound people.
In time a heavy bandit presence grew in the defenseless lands of Lentaine as highwaymen and cutthroats realized that the scattered farmers and hunters were easy prey. In time these bandits ran a criminal enterprise totally enveloping Lentaine. This persisted until a party of adventurers cleared out the bandit threat.
