Memorial In Honour Of The Brave Men Who Died Fighting For West Ilandian Freedom
Purpose / Function
The building was built as a last tribute to every fallen soldier and to serve as a graveyard, of course.
Architecture
It's a big, marble obelisk surrounded by a circle of graves with a diameter of 4,5 km.
The obelisk is 45 meter tall and is inscripted with names of 60,000 missing soldiers.
History
In 1942 it became clear the old graveyards wouldn't be enough for all the fallen soldiers so the government bought a large lap of land near Framton and assigned it to become home of 1 million graves.
In 1947, with victory in sight, the government assigned the center of the graveyard to be left untouched, as they needed a great monument there.
Over time they simply forgot to build a monument.
In 1951 Rodrick Dagna, mayor of Framton, decided to start building the monument to boost his re-election.
By 1952 it was finished but Rodrick did not win the elections.
Over time the obelisk somehow became a communist symbol and it was one of the main places early communists gathered.
The building still stands today.
Tourism
Each year almost 1 million people visit the enormous graveyard.
