Great Burggrave of Putland

Demography and Population

At its first Golden Age, in the 1600s, the Burggraves of Putlan controlled 29 million subjects, divided almost equally over its lands. The biggest cities at the time were:
  1. Pattana, from 1635-1649 (450,000)
  2. Marcio (375,000)
  3. Putlan (280,000)
  4. Singar (250,000)
  5. Sarran (120,000)
  6. Markom (100,000)
  7. Diya (80,000)
  8. Sleekhol (75,000)
  9. Wilsons (55,000)
  10. Mudwells (50,000)
During the early 1700s however the population and land controlled by the burggraves decreased. According to various sources in Putlan the burggraves only controlled some 14 million subjects and a third of their former land. Altough Putlan was weakened it was still a heavyweight in Ilandian politics and heavily influenced Northern Ilandian politics in the following few centuries. The power of the viscounts was dealt a severe blow in 1720, when the Maxeans overwhelmed the country and usurped much of the authority of the local rulers, including the family of viscounts. According to Maxean sources the burggraves of Putland only controlled 5 million people at the time, many of whom are impoverished and not contributing to economic activity.   But during the late stages of Maxean reign, the old lineage rapidly gained power and land, and virtually became the viceroy of Ilandia. They eventually were among the first to declare the independence of Ilandia, but their position as leader of Ilandia was challenged by the Duke of Framton, Alphonse of Framton.
