Wastebones

Not all of the Waste consists of the deadly sands. Only almost all of it. Some small portions of it are safe, though anyone looking at them would be very hard pressed to label them as “small.” Because bizarrely, almost all, if not all safe ground in the Wild Waste takes the form of massive, half-buried skeletons, made up of a sort of bleached, stonelike material. The origin of these colossal corpses, called wastebones is a matter of some debate, though the most commonly agreed upon conclusion goes something along the lines of “we have no clue, and suspect we never will.” Despite this, most can agree on one thing: they’re great for building towns on. Mostly because there is nothing else available to build towns on, but also because they are surprisingly quite easy to dig into, and hollowing them out or digging tunnels through them can be done with ease. Because of the bizarre geography of their foundations, Wastern towns can be quite awkward to navigate, though after living in the Waste for some time one typically gets used to it. A Wastern town often makes use of scaffolding, rope and pulley lifts, winding tunnel systems, and other such treacherous things to allow travel from one end of the town to the other with relative ease, besides perhaps a few bumps and scrapes and the occasional fall to one’s death. Wastebone skeletons often vary quite widely in size, shape, and probable origin. Some are incredibly small, and a whole skull is barely large enough for a single home. Others are massive, with whole cities being founded on just a part of them. Some appear to come from somewhat humanoid creatures, others appear to come from something more bestial, and some are just so bizarre that they defy classification. For example, one of the more notable and largest wastebones, which some call Anth’Tkur and others call Hollowhome, seems to have originated from some sort of massive turtle-like creature.
