Banishment of Udar

Summary

Before the islands have ever existed there was the dragon god, Radu. He tended to his garden in the clouds, content in his old age. However, Radu's sibling, Udar, grew jealous of Radu's power, for he was the most powerful of all gods.   Wanting to take the throne from Radu, Udar gave up their individuality to attain power to rival that of their brother. Udar took the form of a great feathered being with eight mighty tentacles, a formidable foe for even the great Radu.   Their fight was long; Udar beat Radu's scales and they broke off, though they stayed afloat in the air, forming the islands of the Vast Sky. After many days of battle, Radu overpowered Udar. He bit into the beast's body and they both plummeted towards the great abyss below. There, Radu keeps Udar in his jaws, not allowing the beast to emerge back to the surface.   One day, however, Udar will free itself from Radu's teeth and come take back its throne as the King of Gods, and the fish in the clouds shall be the heralds of his coming, engulfed in fear.

Spread

The myth is something akin to a children's tale and a sailor legend. Not many people know it well, most having heard it either from their grandmothers or from fishers who swear on their souls they've seen giant tentacles rip whole ships apart.   Still, it is perhaps the most wide-spread myth on the islands.

Variations & Mutation

Cloud folk view the myth in various ways. Some see it as a cautionary tale to be wary of the clouds below, others as a religious text, others still as nothing but a story.   Everyone has their own version of this story, adding flourishes in some parts and taking them away in others.
