An Cuidreach - Overview

The Approach:
Passing from the Quiraing involves crossing the regio boundary, only when the valley fills with mist rising up at night, soon after dawn, or under the light of the Longest Day of the Year. Its consistency varies from hot and humid, to bone chilling cold, with opposite extremes existing paces apart. It is quiet here. Living things rarely stir. Those with Second Sight may perceive the mist as thriving with spirits, ghosts of lost travelers, malicious imps, river sprites, and tortured spirits that have forgotten their purpose and origin, and others.   Finding the boundary to exit the Quiraing is easy as finding a clearing in the fog, easily accomplished with Auram magic; but finding Au Cuidreach requires finding a hidden circle of light. The boundary cannot be perceived from any other location. Finding the circle requires at least an hour, and a failed Perception test (Ease Factor 12) requires another hour. Once the boundary is crossed, the Covenant becomes visible.
The Circle of Light Mu (Pe)Vi(Te) 79 Pen +0, constant effect R: Touch D: Constant T: Boundary. This shrinks access to the covenant to a small circle of light ten paces in diameter, preventing anyone seeing into the next level of regio unless standing in it. This spell utilizes the Mystery of Hermetic Architec- ture and the enchantment Closed Privacy of the Enchanted Regio, both detailed in The Mysteries Revised Edition, page 97.

THE COVENANT OF AN CUIDREACH:

From the circle of light, a successful regio perception reveals the entrance of a massive 120ft high shard of basalt. Leaving the main path marked by a cairn, one climbs a steep muddy slope to reach the Needle.

THE NEEDLE

A 120 ft shard of basalt stands guard at the front of the covenant. By stepping from the main path to a muddy slope, there’s a climb to reach the structure. Upon closer inspection it’s more obvious that it is wizard’s tower, leaning sideways, summoned from the solid rock of the Quiraing.

THE PRISON

Further along the scramble is a rectangular castle keep made of solid rock that dominates over the landscape around. Half the Keep is embedded in the very mountain; only the top is unattached, rising seven stories tall.

THE TABLE

A ladder of turf footsteps beyond the Prison lead up a 500m summit. Hidden behind rock formations and cliff faces, a flat, grassy plateau that extends out with an impressive landscape looking out as far as Rona.   It has been said that hundreds of years ago the Table was used by locals to hide sheep and cattle from invaders, as this hidden plateau cannot be seen from lower down.

Architecture

A grim place, An Cruidreach was built by Diedne wizards with arcane arts and dark sorcery.    Dragon architecture can be found throughout the covenant, such as small dragons framing gates and dragon claws holding torches. Doors can be set in the mouths of stone dragons. Designs include basilisks, cockatrices, demons, griffins, hellhounds, manticores, minotaurs, wyverns, and other creatures.
