Floor 14: Field of Giants

"Few blue sashes ever get a chance to appreciate the sights and wonders the Tower has to offer on their first few ascents. They're usually too busy fending for their own lives. But I'll never get tired of seeing the look on their faces when they first reach the Field of Giants. Never."
-Kulmariss of the Updraft
Rumors abound that the Tower is composed of infinite levels. Its floors unending just like the trials mortalkind must face in order to return once more to the High Place and be in the presence of Tay. To date, conventional knowledge supposes that there are at least sixty-seven floors the Guilds are aware of. Fifty-two of those sixty-seven have been thoroughly explored and mapped out by the pathfinders of the Copperwalk Charter. Many are wondrous to behold and are as equally dangerous as they are awe inspiring. Few, however, have gained the notoriety of Floor 14's expansive grassy fields and gargantuan stone columns.

Geography

The Field of Giants is surprisingly flat. Though modern geographical knowledge seems to hold no sway on how anything works within the Tower, the fields are not hilly or rolling. They are flat. Rows upon rows seem to be tilled into the dirt, separating the grassy fields like earth-spanning scratches in its surface. Pathfinders of the Copperwalk Charter have walked for miles and miles, days even, before finding the boundaries of Floor 14. How the Tower's interior appears to be greater in size than its outside appearance is still a mystery to this day.   The width and breadth of the fields, though mesmerizing, is not the main feature of the floor's geography. What really draws the eye are the massive stone columns that stretch towards the sky. Humongous in height, several seem to disappear into the clouds, perhaps even touching the ceiling of the floor. Of the many that expand beyond sight, there are hundreds that have either collapsed or toppled. Many more seem to dot the fields with various heights and widths. The smallest are like small slabs of rectangular stone, like a building part of a home on the surface. Others come up to the waist, or the shoulders, or rise to the heights of pillars.   The size of the "giants" never seem to stay the same. Extensive study by Librarians of the Conservatory have found that as time progresses, the stones seem to grow. What one cloudcatcher might see upon reaching Floor 14 may differ from another's view a week or so later. The constant threat of stone growing too tall or too offset from its base means that falling stone is a threat. Many unaware individuals have been surprised and crushed by suddenly broken stone towers that topple down.

Fauna & Flora

Few animals of any sort have been sighted on the Field of Giants. There seems to be no natural fauna that calls this place home. There are occasional sightings of creatures here or there, mostly of simple thunderboars. Dangerous as they are, they seem to have come from other floors where they might be found.    The flora is composed almost entirely of the simple innocuous grass that coats the ground everywhere. It seems to hold no special properties and is of a kind botanists believe to be unnaturally occurring on Oara. There is the occasional moss or lichen that grows on the hundreds upon thousands of stones that seem to grow here. Other than being rather nutrient-filled, the moss and lichen hold no other special properties.    Some scholars have recently attempted to plant numerous types of plants, ranging from flowers and trees to fruits and vegetables, in the fields. Curiously, nothing seems to want to grow whatsoever.

Natural Resources

Stone from the Field of Giants is the main natural resource. Though samples of the stones, grass, soil, moss, and lichen have been taken, no one has yet to attempt to start acquiring large sums of stone. The amount of effort and coordination to transport such heavy material in large numbers, not to mention the dangers of having to travel through thirteen other floors of the Tower, make it a task not even worth the profit and material.

History

"It kind of looks like a farmer's field, but... Who would farm stone?"
References in firsthand historical accounts to the Field of Giants date back as far as pre-2nd Resurgence. During this period, dedicated explorations into the Tower slowly became commonplace and the concept of cloudcatchers and ascents were born. About fifty years after the 1st Resurgence was beaten back the reconstruction efforts were complete. Around three years afterwards, Floor 14 had been reached. Credit as to who reached the floor first is uncertain. All is known is that several figureheads of early Guild history wrote firsthand accounts about their reaching the Field of Giants. These include Saint Corpin himself, patron saint of the Copperwalk Charter, Jaador the Fancy, Srijan Chuu, and Luan Den Ro.
