Forrest the Unbaby

Forrest

A tiny, helpless child found in the cruel Darkwoods. They were abandoned, but were found by Claire Blackwell, who took them in. Her maternal drive kept the tiny creature alive, even when it was discovered that Forrest was drinking her blood. For a few days, Forrest had three parents looking after them: Claire, Conor, and Kaiess.

After feeding on them for several days, Forrest grew to double in size and began to split in two like the division of a cell. They produced two tiny, identical babies, which crawled off like slugs into the wilderness. Claire Blackwell killed both of them.
The group took the remains of the less-damaged half of Forrest into Crowhill, where a monster expert identified them as a type of telepathic, polymorphic ooze called a Treacle.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Forest appears to be tiefling baby, about two months old. They have orange tinted skin and small nubby horns. However, it is increasingly clear that Forrest is not what they appear to be. They can only drink blood, and reject or spit up other foods. Forrest also rejected a slain undead skin bat that was offered to them as a meal. They are not harmed by sunlight or contact with iron or silver.

As the group learns after their death, Forrest chose this form based on what they sensed would be most appealing to the person who first found them, Claire Blackwell: a tiny infant, helpless and lost, and visibly a member of a humanoid subspecies of which Claire has lineage, one which Claire knew to be targeted by superstition and hatred. By lucky happenstance (for Forrest), anti-tiefling sentiment was particularly strong in the area in which they were found, increasing Claire's sympathy towards them.
Forrest can only drink blood from living, warm-blooded creatures. Blood from dead creatures, blood that has gone cold, or blood from cold-blooded creatures is rejected, as with any other food.
Treacles reproduce by splitting into two smaller oozes.
As a Treacle, Forrest doesn't poop. They just secrete slime.

Body Features

Conor Oakenriver discovered that the rough-spun blanket Forrest was found wrapped in is connected to the flesh of their back, and seems to actually be a part of their body.
Forrest's true form, which is only revealed after they are killed, is a formless silvery-white blob. They bleed a similarly-colored fluid.

Physical quirks

Forrest does not appear to have the same bodily functions as a typical baby. They do, however, sometimes secrete a slightly sticky slime.
Kaiess Knolltun discovered that in the two days since they were discovered, Forrest has grown in size. The change apparently happened quickly, as a diaper that was loosely tied in the morning of the second day was so tight it cut into their skin by afternoon. This growth seems to be in terms of size only, as it was not accompanied by any other noticeable physical or mental development that would imply maturation.

By the time they began to split in two, they had doubled in size and grown to the rough dimensions of a one-year-old child.

Apparel & Accessories

Found wrapped in a rough-spun swaddling cloth.

Specialized Equipment

To keep Forrest from having prolonged physical contact with anyone, they are carried in a basket with a burlap sack for padding. Eventually, they grow too large to fit in it.

Mental characteristics

Intellectual Characteristics

Forrest's days follow a simple routine: wake up, fuss a little, cry when hungry, be fed, become drowsy, and sleep. The process is typically repeated 4-5 times a day. While the extent of Forrest's awareness of their surroundings is unknown, they do seem to enjoy holding things in their fists and putting things in their mouth, and seem to react to the sight of people close by, such as those peering into their basket. They also reacted with fear when faced with a predatory creature rustling around their blankets.

Taboos

In rural Varellia, the birth of tieflings are thought to be omens of imminent destruction to a community. Such children are often killed after being born as a way to try to prevent such grim futures.
