Drakish

Dragon People (Dreeple)

The Drakish, or Drakaan, are a cold-blooded species of lizard folk that populate the Northern deserts and islands. They are massive, usually around eight feet and hundreds of pounds, and bear horns, claws, and teeth resembling that of dragons, thus their given name (Drakaan is a human word to describe them-- the Drakish have no word in their tongue for what they simply see as people). Because the Drakish homelands are hostile to outsiders and tend to keep out of foreign politics, many speculate on their customs and origins. Some say they are the ancestors of elves or humans who drank the blood of dragons and became monsters, exiled in the desert wastes. Others claim that they are blessed by gods of war, given superhuman strength and might. Mostly the Drakaan want to be left alone and out of any silly rumors.

Shared customary codes and values

Some have called Bhakmet the Drakish religion, but it's more a code of conduct. How to act, how to dress, how to wage war, and how to perform rituals are all written in the Bhakmet. Drakish culture is a warrior culture-- infighting among and between tribes is common, and the Northern mountains and desert beyond them is harsh and filled with all manner of beasts and demons. To survive, Drakaan must follow these rules outlined by their ancestors. Some are meant to limit casualties, like the codes of war, others to prevent disease like the codes of cleanliness. Magic is forbidden in Drakish society and practice is punishable by death-- whether this stems from a primitive fear of it passed down for millennia or from overzealous prevention of possession and the like is unknown. An exception is made, it seems, for the Bajaik's runic tattoos, a form of combat magic similar to the medical magic practiced by Dwarves.

Common Dress code

The Drakish, despite living in hotter climes, insist on covering their entire fronts at all times, often with armor. Drakaan have a soft belly, similar to a Dragon's, that is their major vulnerability as it is not protected by scales like the rest of their body.

Ideals

Gender Ideals

The Drakish have no gender ideals, simply because they have no concept of gender. Biological sex usually defaults to intersex, with little to no visible secondary sex characteristics after puberty.

Courtship Ideals

Sexuality in Drakish society is complicated. While many Drakish take a life partner-- a Shiraketh-- romance or sex between partners is taboo. Drakish society does not speak of sex or sexuality in public, and many partners are taken behind closed doors, but romance never factors into it. When one partner becomes pregnant, both partners will raise the hatchling as their own, or if they are away at battle, "gift" the child to someone close to them.

Major organizations

The Bajaik are a class of warrior-elites that undergo harsh training and ritual tattooing, imbuing them with combat magics that make them a formidable opponent in battle. The Bajaik protect royalty, guard treasures or sacred places, or are used as human weapons in wartime. Becoming Bajaik is a harsh existence, but one that many undertake in order to elevate their family's status.
