Dwellings of the Fairy Folk

Under Dewdrops and Mushroom Caps

The Fairy Folk, comprised of Pixies and Sprites, each like to adapt Nature to suit their needs for a home. They often use what is already there - mushroom, flowers, bushes, tree trunks, burrows - and build around it, or even inside of it.   These people tend to live with others of the same race, often in groups of 30 to 40 faeries, although sometimes Pixies and Sprites will build villages where they live together, even if that's an exception to the norm. Pixies tend to be more playful and fond of harmless pranks and illusions. They often observe passersby while invisible, giggling and whispering all around them. They trust easily and like to make friends with people who visit, but if one breaks that trust, or harms any of them, they'll take their revenge, making them sleep and dragging them to a forgotten corner of a forest, and leave them there all wrapped in vines and roots, just as an example. Sprites on the other hand are a lot more suspicious of strangers. You do not want to trespass on a Sprite village, for they will attack you without warning. They'll try to lead intruders astray with ominous whispers, rustling from bushes, and distant snapping twigs, If that doesn't work, they will attack and poison the trespassers and leave as soon as they can, retreating further into the forest. If you manage to gain their trust, though, they are fierce warriors who will fight by your side.

These villages don't usually take up a lot of space, seeing as fairy folk are quite tiny. They're often built in forests, on small clearings, or up a handful of tree trunks, or mushroom clusters, or even among the petals of particularly big flowers. At first glance the houses will look like they're natural, just a part of the scenery, but upon further inspection people will notice doors, windows, little chimneys, and knickknacks used to make the house prettier and shinier. Faeries are quite fond of small things that most people would discard to use as decoration for their homes: an earring which has lost its pair, shiny coins, buttons, pebbles and shells with interesting shapes, discarded snail shells, leaves, flowers, acorns, among many others.   Faeries are quite sociable, and they will often fleet from house to house to visit friends, family, and stay there for a while. Even if a fairy lives alone, their house will be big enough to accommodate at least two or three guests. While the exterior of these houses is adorned with natural things, to serve as camouflage as well as beautiful decoration, the insides will also often display the treasures they have found - or stolen - in chaotic arrangements all over the walls, the ceilings, wherever there's space.   One house will never look like any other. They're a representation of their owners, the appearance they want to showcase to the world. They're also quite fragile, which sometimes will tempt more wicked Fey to destroy them on purpose. They think that just because they're tiny, that Fairy Folk won't be able to cause any damage in return. But they're capable of magic, and their small weapons are always as sharp as can be. They will all gather and fight even if only one of them has been hurt. You do not want to be amid a cloud of angry faeries, all armed with sleep magic, poisonous darts, and sharp daggers. They've worked hard on these dwellings and they treasure them dearly. Destroying them is a personal affront.   On the other hand, if you praise them and bring them gifts to prettify their houses, they will adore you, specially Pixies, who are more inclined for decorations than Sprites, who are more practical.   Faeries are known even outside of the Feywild, for they are a part of many a fairytale. Sometimes their villages will be built on the limit between the Material Plane and the Wilds so they can tempt people into their dominion, and make them trade their freedom for favors. People will be curious about what they're seeing, and all of a sudden, oops, they've been tricked into the Feywild. Fairy rings - circles made of mushrooms or dandelions or other flowers - are also well-known portals into the Feywild.
