The Citadel

The Citadel, known also as the Hollow Skyland, was built within the hollowed out center of what was once a volcano, before the Divide.

Demographics

The people living here are an equal mix of all the races found within the skyland, save for Elfathri and Fey Kin, which are rarer yet still present.

History

The Citadel was once owned and ran by a man called only The Leader. It is unknown exactly how long it took or how he managed to gather the resources and men, or if it was even him that did it, but eventually a city of shining opalescence was built within the inner ring of the skyland. Below it were many more levels, each in worse state as they went lower. At the bottom of the shaft were found obsidian mines and refineries, as well as workshops for the production of mechanical things.   Over time, The Leader had built an army of mechanical soldiers, clad in opulent robes of purple and wielding spears of obsidiant. He used these soldiers to imprison anyone who came to the skyland for supplies, forcing them to work off their debt, as the fees for leaving the skyland were exuberant and impossible to pay. In this way The Leader grew the Citadel, and earned it the nickname Shanghai Skyland.   Prisoners on the skyland lived in the slums below the city at the top, and had to work hard labor either in the mines, the refineries, or the production facilities where they produced the very soldiers which kept them imprisoned there. The debt owed was due to the ship itself, and thus the crew of the ship could split up the amount of work required to earn their freedom. Large ships with large crews were able to work off their debt and allowed to safely leave after only a few months, whereas smaller crews were often stuck for years at a time.   During the preclude, and the events of, the Necro War, the Citadel sided with Griss, supplementing his army with The Leader's mechanical soldiers, for a hefty price. During this time, it was the party of heroes including Amemnos, Jormungandr, Captain Graves, Bang the Bomb Goblin, and Kasai, that brought production of the mechanical soldiers to a halt, leading a fleet of warships against the Citadel and wiping out the threat of The Leader.   After the end of the Necro War, Amemnos led the last of the Hand of Anidinth to Citadel, where they made their new home. All of the hundreds of people who had made the slums there their homes were offered a place with the Hand, and most of them accepted; with the ones who said no shuttled back to their original homes and families.

Geography

The Citadel is built within a small skyland that was once a volcano. The skyland itself offers no flat land or plant life, but the shaft running through the center from top to bottom has had a lattice of walkways and buildings built within, tacked securely to the sides. The skyland is comprised entirely of dark basaltic rock.

Natural Resources

The inner walls of the skyland are lined with obsidian, hundreds of feet thick. Near the bottom of the skyland can also be found iron deposits. The refineries located here are capable of combining the obsidian and iron into a strong material known as obsidiant. Obsidiant weapons are known to slice through standard iron like butter, as seen during the Steel Campaigns on the Southern Imperial front during the Necro War.
