Sun Blight

Sun Blight is an acute sensitivity to sunlight, paranoia, and agoraphobia cause by sustained overuse of Dechang's Weed, a medicinal herb cultivated in Shindus. Dechang's Weed was first discovered by Dechang, the 13th representative of Kikerion, as part of his miracle to prove his status as a representative. It is traditionally rendered into a paste with strong painkilling and energizing effects when consumed orally. Although this was initially used strictly for medical purposes in the wake of the military losses suffered at the beginning of the Fall from Grace following the death of Ratsuik, a large number of former soldiers wounded in combat became dependent on it to get through every day life.   People suffering from Sun Blight will usually have a strong aversion to going outside because of the sensitivity to sunlight that they develop as well as the general anxiety about not being within a closed structure that the drug seems to create. They will typically have very pale complexions and wide bloodshot eyes, partially due to the effects of the drug itself but also because of the prolonged avoidance of sunlight and the intense insomnia created by withdrawal.   Sun blight is very common among retired soldiers because of Dechang's Weed's use in field medicine and combat, but it is also very prevalent among farmhands that work on large Kikerion Cooperative farms in and around Lukrar. Although the negative effects of Sun Blight are generally acknowledged and distribution of Dechang's Weed is limited by the medical researchers and distributors of the University of Bamalion, there is still widespread use of it for recreation or productivity related reasons, so there is believed to be a black market for it.   Typically, as people begin to be affected more and more heavily by Sun Blight, they will eventually seek permanent refuge underground. In Lukrar, there are large Sun Blight communities living in the catacombs under the city, but for people living in more rural parts of the nation, they will instead disappear into the cave networks underneath the Shindus valley, rarely to be seen again.

Ooo, I really like this concept! The idea of ex-military subterranean societies lends itself to interesting possibilities.
