The Everweaver

The Everweaver is a reed brush purported to have immense divine power. It was supposedly created originally by Atar, the patron God of magic, in a joint effort with his half-brother Tolima, the patron God of creation and the arts, with the express purpose of allowing them both to reach down into creation to shape the world according to their whims. Atar wove magic into the world and its people, whilst Tolima used the Everweaver to bring artistic beauty to the earth and sky. Akhene mythology speaks of how the Goddess of writing and runes, Yulis, coveted the Everweaver for its power, and stole it away to create the first set of runes used in writing. The reed brush repeatedly bounced back and forth between the three gods until their fighting caused it to fall into the mortal realm, where it has been fought over by their priests for many millennia. Currently, it is held by a sect of Yulis' faith called the Guardians of the Rune; runepriests dedicated to preserving the magic behind runes and the words they form. Whether the Everweaver still contains any shred of the power it once held over creation, no one is truly sure. Powerful runes have been written with it, but often with dire consequences that the Guardians prefer to keep to themselves. For this reason, it has been locked away in their vaults ever since, coveted by many but thus far kept safe.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

No one is truly sure what the Everweaver can do, and just how much power it contains. By all appearances, it looks like an ordinary reed brush used by scribes across the New Kingdom, although perhaps slightly larger than what would be typically comfortable to write with. It has been used in the past by mortals, although the Guardians of the Rune have since expressed extreme caution in using the implement. This has only confirmed to many that it is indeed powerful and maybe even dangerous; rumours of guardians twisted by the Everweaver and used to defend the vault from intruders have not been confirmed by the runepriests but neither have they been discouraged.

Significance

As a creation of two gods from the Akhene pantheon (Atar and Tolima), and an artifact responsible for being the progenitor of three important aspects of creation (magic, nature, and runes), the Everweaver is highly significant and revered by the Akhene people. It is fervently sought after by the worshippers of Atar and Tolima, who believe that their master's creation should rightfully be theirs, although the Guardians of the Rune and much of Yulis' followers would obviously prefer that the symbolic writing implement remain with them. There are those who doubt the validity of the story surrounding the Everweaver's creation, however, although most detractors are not Akhene themselves and do not believe that the culture's pantheon truly exist. Some whisper that the Everweaver is just a powerful artifact created by an ancient sorcerer or runepriest who wanted to gain some measure of control over the material world - to surpass a god, so to speak - but fell short and instead created a dangerous item that destroyed them.
