Realm of Eaerlann

The Woodland Realm

The Realm of Eaerlann is a democratically-led country on the continent of Anuan, and is almost entirely made up of forested region, mountain foothills, and a small stretch of coast. It covers most of the High Forest, neighbouring the Daggerjaw Mountains to the north and the Deep Wood to the south-east. From its capital city of Mhiilamniir, the Council of Eaerlann rule with representatives from every major settlement of the country, covering all aspects of governance from law-making to diplomatic concerns. With Eaerlann's elven monarchic past (the Realm of Eaerlann was formerly known as the Kingdom of Eaerlann), the country is well-known for its elven architecture, culture, and history. Much of its wealth comes from healthy trade with neighbouring realms, such as the City-State of Forgehome and the Kingdom of the Eastern Isles.

Military

Army of Mhiilamniir

Due to the small population of the Realm of Eaerlann, its regular military is equally as small.

Council Guard

The Council Guard is considered to be the highest and most honourable posting a soldier of the regular army can achieve. It was formed from the old King's Guard that existed during the reign of King Altarast Moonfire, with the express intention of serving the same purpose of protecting those who governed the city of Mhiilamniir and its surrounding environs.

Local Militias

Although the regular army is made up of volunteers - highly trained soldiers who have spent most of their life training for the role - the local militias are formed of conscripts who by law must pledge some of their time to training and duty.

The Conscription

To maintain some level of competency in the local militias, as well as encourage new recruits for the regular army, a conscription law exists in Mhiilamniir and its districts which sees all children of every family, so long as they are physically and mentally able and displaying no signs of magical talent, conscripted into a part-time training regime from the age of seven. This law (called quite simply 'The Conscription') was introduced shortly after the abdication of King Altarast Moonfire, to end the several millennia-long tradition of compulsory military service for at least one adult male or female from each family. The Conscription, which is viewed as much more flexible by the populace at large, ensures that children are prepared for their adult life of duty in the militia. The training is generally quite relaxed, particularly for the first few years. Children are familiarised with various weapons and fighting styles, letting them find the one they are most talented in. Wooden practice weapons are used up until the point that the trainers (usually veteran militiamen) feel that a child is ready to move on to heavier, metal weapons. By the age of twelve, the children are starting to learn about military formations, drill, and how to care for their equipment. An emphasis is placed on learning about the phalanx, which is the most common formation and fighting tactic used by the Army of Mhiilamniir, although this is generally reserved for those children who are focusing on melee training. Archery and skirmishing training is stepped up with advanced classes in fletching and bow-making with the Bowmasters of Mhiilamniir (a prominent future employer of those training in ranged militia roles), and specialist exercises in talents such as horse archery and trick shooting are encouraged to be taken so as to maximise the expertise of the trainees. At fifteen, the number of hours spent training is increased to six hours every weekend. This is due to the extra skills taught to the children, as well as the fact that large-scale 'wargames' are often organised to put what they have learned into practice. Throughout their training, exercise is also strongly encouraged; trainers often find ways of making the exercise seem fun by providing obstacle courses or inventing competitive games. As such, most children find their five or six hours of afternoon training at weekends to be enjoyable, with some wanting to practice out of hours or play with friends they make at the training. The idea of bringing the community together, particularly from an early age, has made The Conscription extremely successful. The militia has gone from being a poorly-trained and ill-equipped band of farmers in the days of King Altarast to a successful, close-knit fighting force that is more than capable of holding their own alongside the regular army. Some children, after completing their training at eighteen, go for a career in the Army of Mhiilamniir, ensuring that the army not only has a fresh stream of recruits, but also ones that are already trained and experienced. Those that do not join the army go into whatever line of work they wish to have whilst dedicating some of their time to their local militia, as per the law.
