The Rose Sulphur Mines

A geological aberration, "rose sulphur" is a mysterious compound found only in the Scepter, along the eastern border of the swamp land where it lies hidden in a deep crevasse. When sunlight strikes the compound, it reveals a neon pink, chalky substance that steams and stinks of sulphur. Rose Sulphur is used as a common die, but mainly for its highly stable quality in solid form and highly combustible quality in liquid form where it's used as a fuel for Gavenlow's most modern inventions. Though the College at Garden Hill disagrees in its official assessment of the material, it is known by most workers and common folk alike to possess potent, dangerous magic.
Because the great gash in which the sulphur is mined rests amidst swamp land and river land, the mine itself is heavily fortified and built up with a series of canals and wooden channels, framed to reroute nature's water lines away from the entrance in order to keep the raw material in its safest form--dry. However, the mines have been known to be shut down for a light rain, and even as little as a heavy fog, as even a small amount of water can cause the sulphur to fume and react in a dangerous manner.
For this reason, too, workers are not allowed to drink, urinate, or sweat while in the mine. Bleeding is discouraged above all else.

Alterations

A recent addition in the last several years, the foreman can recieve signals of coming rain from a nearby watchtower and order the workers to deploy a series of pullies and tarps to cover the hundred meter wide opening of the mine to keep it dry and keep the work advancing.

Architecture

An industrial elevator powered by the same substance they're mining raises the minerals from the pit up to the processing warehouse. The workers are still expected to take the narrow and smoothly warn staircases carved into the walls of the pit.
