Manaburn

A rare condition which only affects those with an ability to wield magic, Manaburn is an type of magical backlash which often afflicts only the most inexperienced or reckless of spellcasters. While each case is somewhat unique in it's cause and severity there are a number of common elements which unify them into a single condition.

Cause:

Manaburn is generally caused due to a misfire of a spell. Students first learning magic often experience very minor cases, sometimes as a deliberate lesson by their instructors, as they are prone to making mistakes with their spells and lack the experience to properly ground the energy they'd gathered. The more severe cases are often caused when extremely power spells and spell rituals are disrupted due to external circumstance, and the caster lacks the focus or time to properly dissipate the energy which has been gathered before the magic backfires.

Symptoms:

The symptoms of Manaburn are wide ranging depending on exactly how the spell misfires, the spell which was improperly cast, and the preparedness and experience of the caster to dissipate the spell. 
Minor Symptoms:

• discomfort
• minor burns, rashes, or blistering of the skin
• headache
• tingling extremities
• nausea

Moderate Symptoms:

• broken bones
• moderate burn, scorched flesh, soars or major blistering
• temporary blindness
• temporary deafness
• temporary loss of taste and/or smell
• numbness
• severe headache/migraine 
• temporary inability to wield magic
• minor loss of magical capacity

Severe Symptoms:

• severe, potentially life threatening, burns
• difficulty breathing
• severely broken or lost limbs
• permanent loss of one or more senses
• traumatic brain injury
• nerve damage
• permanent and severe loss of ability to wield magic, potential complete loss of magical ability
• death
