The Last Greenseer

Before the Concordance of Aligned Realms, the Pactlands were a fractured tapestry of fiercely independent tribes and proto-states. Each group fought for survival in a chaotic and dangerous world, where territorial skirmishes and ancient blood feuds were as commonplace as the rising sun. Among these were the tribes of Caede, known for their fierce warriors and enigmatic mystics, and the disparate peoples of what would become Halen, Rasza, Shavi, and Vector. Magic was untamed and misunderstood, with no unified effort to harness its potential for the greater good.   The disunity among the tribes was a fertile breeding ground for the Vorrath, the enigmatic agents of the Endless Maw. These shadowy entities, whose nature remains elusive in historical accounts, were harbingers of entropy and chaos, spreading corruption that fractured alliances and sowed distrust among the tribes. Some said they took on human forms to infiltrate and manipulate; others believed them to be eldritch horrors that defied understanding. Whatever their true nature, the Vorrath heralded the Endless Maw’s relentless advance.

The Battle of Eventide

The turning point came with the Battle of Eventide, a desperate and decisive confrontation against the Endless Maw and its Vorrath agents. Waendael Murfain, then a relatively unknown figure among the Caede mystics, emerged as a leader capable of uniting the warring tribes of the Continent. His gift of foresight allowed him to predict not only the strategies of the Vorrath but also the decisions of the tribal chieftains and warlords. It is said that Murfain convened the first gathering of the tribal leaders who eventually went on to sign the Concordance of Aligned Realms at a place now lost to history, known only as The Glade of Twilight, where he persuaded them to set aside their grievances and fight as one.   At Eventide, the tribes fought together for the first time in living memory, their warriors bolstered by the combined might of fledgling magi from every corner of the realms. Murfain himself led the charge. Legend speaks of his visions guiding the tribes to key victories on the battlefield and outmaneuvering the Vorrath in a climactic stand that secured the freedom of humanity.

The Concordance and Murfain’s Legacy

The victory at Eventide marked the beginning of a new era. The surviving leaders, recognizing the fragility of their unity, gathered under Murfain’s guidance to pen the Concordance of Aligned Realms. Murfain was instrumental in drafting its principles, embedding the ideals of mutual protection, magical stewardship, and collective progress into the foundation of the newly aligned nations.   Though Murfain’s insights proved invaluable in shaping the Concordance, his work was far from complete. As the tribes transformed into nations, and the High Magus Council took root, Murfain disappeared from public life. Some accounts suggest he foresaw his own irrelevance in the new world he had helped create. Others whisper of darker reasons—perhaps he glimpsed a future too terrible to bear, or perhaps the Vorrath's influence reached even him. Whatever the truth, Murfain vanished into legend.

The Mystery of His Disappearance

In the centuries since his disappearance, countless theories have emerged about Wendael Murfain’s fate. Some say he withdrew to the hidden places of the world, becoming a silent watcher over the Pactlands. Others believe he perished in a final, unseen battle against the Vorrath, his sacrifice unrecorded in the annals of history. A few fringe scholars speculate he stepped beyond time itself, carried away by his Greenseer visions.   Though his ultimate fate remains a mystery, Murfain’s legacy endures in the Pactlands. His name is invoked as a symbol of unity in times of crisis, and his role as the Last Greenseer remains a poignant reminder of the cost of humanity’s survival.
