Free Folk

The Free Folk are a diverse and fiercely independent group of people who inhabit the Disputed Lands, a vast, anarchistic territory beyond the reach and laws of the Pact. The term "Free Folk" refers broadly to all residents of the Disputed Lands, though many among them find the term reductive and laden with condescension when used by outsiders. To the Pactbound, it implies lawlessness and chaos, but to those who live in the Disputed Lands, it reflects a life of resilience, resourcefulness, and self-determination.   The relationship between the Free Folk and the Pactlands is fraught with tension. Under the Concordance of Aligned Realms, anyone may emigrate to the Disputed Lands, but return to the Pactlands is strictly prohibited. This restriction creates a sense of abandonment and exclusion, particularly as the Free Folk are left to fend for themselves in a region rife with conflict, scarcity, and danger.   The Pactbound are often viewed with resentment and suspicion. To the Free Folk, the Pactlands represent comfort and protection—luxuries denied to those who have chosen or been forced to live beyond its borders. Many Free Folk perceive the Pact’s refusal to intervene or aid them as hypocrisy, even as the Pact condones Vector’s incursions into their territory under dubious pretexts.   This resentment manifests in the Free Folk’s culture as a deep pride in their autonomy and disdain for what they see as the sheltered lives of the Pactbound. Some Free Folk refer to the Pactlands with derisive nicknames like "The Gilded Cage" or "The Cloistered Realms," emphasizing their belief that true freedom exists only beyond its borders.

Life among the Free Folk is as varied as the Disputed Lands themselves:   Decentralized Communities: Villages, hamlets, and tribes are scattered across the territory, each with its own customs and rules. Leadership varies widely, from councils of elders to charismatic leaders or even loose collectives.
Resourcefulness: The Free Folk are skilled in adapting to their harsh environment, excelling in subsistence farming, hunting, foraging, and trading.
Militias and Mercenaries: With no standing armies, defense falls to local militias or mercenary groups, which often double as bandits in leaner times.
Cultural Melting Pot: The Disputed Lands are home to a rich mix of traditions, languages, and religions brought by its diverse inhabitants. This diversity can lead to both vibrant cultural exchange and sharp conflict.
Despite their differences, a shared spirit of independence binds the Free Folk. They are a people shaped by hardship, proud of their ability to thrive without the protection of a centralized authority.

The Free Folk’s anarchistic way of life stands in stark contrast to the tightly governed realms of the Pactlands. For better or worse, they embody the raw spirit of freedom—unrestrained by laws, yet unprotected by them. To some, the Disputed Lands represent opportunity and independence; to others, they are a place of exile and peril.   As tensions rise with the Empire of Vector’s recent occupation and the incursion of Halen forces, the Free Folk find themselves caught in the crossfire of larger powers. Despite this, they remain fiercely determined to protect their way of life, forging alliances where necessary and resisting subjugation at all costs.   To the Free Folk, survival is an act of defiance, and their legacy is one of enduring freedom in the face of unrelenting adversity.

Culture

Culture and cultural heritage

The Free Folk are a mixture of peoples who arrived in the Disputed Lands for many reasons:   Outcasts and Criminals: Exiled from the Pactlands for crimes, real or perceived, they fled to the Disputed Lands where no central authority could pursue them.
Fugitives: Escaping political oppression, debts, or persecution, many sought refuge in the Disputed Lands to start anew.
Immigrants by Choice: Drawn by the promise of freedom from strict laws, taxes, and cultural conformity, some arrived willingly to carve out a life of independence.
Descendants: Generations of families who have lived in the Disputed Lands, adapting to its dangers and opportunities, now identify deeply with its anarchistic culture.
The Free Folk are unified not by a shared ancestry, culture, or even values but by their rejection of outside control and their ability to survive in a challenging and unpredictable environment.
