Feral, flying lesser cousins of dragons found worldwide, drakes are some of the most dangerous creatures on the planet.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Drakes are massive, robust lizards, with pterodactyl-like forelimb-wings, a therapsid-like snout and a long tail. A magical organ in their throat known as a "firechamber" allows them to spit flame (n the form of a flammable venom produced by glands immediately behind the organ, which is then aerosolized and ignited by the firechamber itself. This venom is extremely corrosive in addition to flammable, and drakes are capable of spitting it without igniting it; this combination of both corrosive spit and burning fire makes fighting drakes extremely dangerous business.

Ecology and Habitats

Drakes nest in mountainous regions, typically on mountaintops or inaccessible crags. Preying an anything it an get its claws on, drakes carry most of their kills back to their nest before consumption.

Drake bone is a magically active material with a number of uses, while drake teeth are extremely sharp and useful as a tool for working tough materials. Drake hide maintains a constant warm temperature, making it useful as an insulator.

Drakes are found worldwide in almost all mountainous regions. Thankfully, their individual territories are very wide, keeping population density low.

Drakes have awful hearing and a mediocre sense of smell, but razor sharp eyesight that makes them difficult to hide from.
