Shadow Stalker Species in The Realms | World Anvil

Shadow Stalker

...we didn't realize it at first, you see. After the Convergence, it took years to discover that another Realm had been connected [...] exploring outside the city revealed great forests and once well tended roads. We didn't understand why they had the precautions they did. We soon did.
— An excerpt from a journal detailing the first explorations of the 14th Realm
Of all the creatures that hunt in the 14th Realm, the Shadow Stalkers is the most dangerous. This feline has no natural predators, having evolved to harness the elemental mana of the Realm to the point that many of its attacks, instead of being neutral, have an elemental tinge. Combined with the ability to turn invisible and quick reflexes, the number of creatures that can hunt the Stalkers have become nonexistent.   Of those who seek to hunt Stalkers, only the Lost Walkers dare to take on large groups of them. Other adventurers stay wary of these great beasts, preferring to take on only one or two at a time, and never alone.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Shadow Stalkers are feline in form, with four legs, a head with front-facing eyes and a tail for balance. Their pelts are a natural brown that is iridescent in sunlight. This iridescence can be used to identify which type of mana the Stalkers have metabolized, a red-orange tinge for fire, blue-white for water, green-yellow for air, and brown-black for earth.   Stalkers can make themselves invisible for as long as they like, making them the perfect ambush predator. Despite all attempts, no one has been able to identify how they do this, although looking at the pelts are the fact have shown that they take spells and enchantments dealing with sight far easier then others.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Shadow Stalkers are carnivores, feasting upon the flesh of any foolish enough to get it their way. Due to their invisibility, they are able to sneak up on most prey and take them down quickly and swiftly.
