Shared customary codes and values

For cosmopolitan Brits, especially in the city of London, a sense of adventure is a must. This applies to almost everything done outside the home, and was the driving force behind the expansion of the Commonwealth.

Common Dress code

Civilian

Owing to Victoria's moral values at the time, citizens would dress in clothing that had subdued outlines but occasional flashes of color as they could afford. It was no longer illegal to wear "royal" colors but they were still costly to produce.

Military

Looks are everything, and first impressions especially so.
Soldiers and officers have to be sharply dressed if they are part of the royal guard. Their uniforms consist of black standing hats, red shirts, and dark blue trousers.

To keep their posture upright, they also had to wear stiff leather collars with their uniforms. It was poor discipline to cut the collar up or soften it in any way.

Soldiers in faraway regions such as the tropics had the relative luxury of not having to dress so stiffly, but the unfamiliar weather was the price they had to pay for that.

Common Customs, traditions and rituals

Military

Recruiting into the British army starts with accepting a royal shilling in a bar. Unlike previous centuries where there was no choice to back out, 19th century citizens had one day to reconsider.

After some training, troops are usually deployed to the far reaches of the Commonwealth to keep the peace, often without their families to accompany them.

To stave off loneliness, British army members tend to form close friendships with each other, essentially becoming like a single unit in battle if they click.

They are often told that they are bringing civilization to the unwashed masses, by force if they have to. Perhaps as a result of this, British officers in the other regions have a poor opinion of native citizens.

If there is a victory, officers can look forward to a military parade and commendations from Queen Victoria herself, as well as better social standing.
