British Navy

Structure

In theory, there is only a ranking divide with the captain at the top, lieutenants and other skilled officers second, and ordinary sailors at the bottom.   However, there is also a social divide between gentlemen and working class sailors. Promotion is usually granted after years of service at sea, leading to the logical assumption (among the sailors, that is) of hiring young boys to work as cabin assistants.

Culture

Shipboard Living

Life on a Navy ship is incredibly busy even on a simple mission to patrol the coast. At the crack of dawn all hands had to get up and assemble on deck, before setting off for practice and cleaning.   The cannoneers had to maintain their guns, carpenters the ship's hulls, sailing masters the rigging, and so on.

Battlefield

During a skirmish, Royal Navy ships prefer overwhelming firepower to wear down their opponents. This does not mean the average sailor was a pushover, though.   Each man was ideally trained in the art of swordfighting as well as of pistol-handling in case of boarding.

Views on Women

While women were generally not hired or allowed on Navy ships, officers' wives, sisters, and daughters could occasionally book passage on board. The Royal Navy has a comprehensive health care system, which included compulsory vaccination against smallpox, free medical treatment for sailors, a sick bay and doctors on every ship. Some of these nurses and doctors were women from the Misericorde Order.   Unfortunately, if the doctors and women in question were young enough, mischief would happen. This was part of the reason some naval detachments greatly preferred hiring male clerics.

Public Agenda

To keep the oceans of the British Empire safe and sound.

Assets

The Royal Navy has ship fleets mostly in in the Malay Archipelago, South Africa, and parts of the New World.

History

Since the beginning of England's history,    The Royal Navy as we know it was formally codified in the 18th century.   From 1807 to the present in 1850 the Navy has been involved in stamping out slave trade in Africa as well as rooting out the last of the pirates based in the region.
