A fully self-aware AI construct that has been tasked with maintaining, healing and preserving the biosphere, natural landmarks & historic sectors.

Assets

All mechanized assets are designed to reflect the local fauna, who have been normalized (behaviorally, genetically and pheromonally) to not fear them. Same for Rangers that blend with environment.

History

The oldest of the Protocols (at least in concept), Wild Gardener traces it's roots (pun intended) back to an unlikely source: the Midwestern militias that popped up following the de-funding of the US National guard and NPS. To fill the law enforcement gap certain militia forces were given legal amnesty in exchange for bringing them under the new National Park Preservation Paramilitary Service (NP3S). They half-mockingly adopted the moniker of 'Ranger'. They were hesitant at first of trusting the Biodiversity Recuperation AI project, but it greatly improved the scope and funding of the org. It also used clever cultural integration algorithms to simulate an appreciation and understanding of their culture in a way that no 'big-wig' ever had.
With funding from Environmentalist Trusts and the Space Corps Consortium NP3S not only survived the 2045-2052 congress shutdown, but became an independent global paramilitary service no longer beholden to the US. It began operations in uninhabited wilderness areas, either with the government's blessing (anti-poaching ops in Kenya) or without (Amazon reforestation). By now the Wild Mother personality had fully taken form and had integrated seamlessly as the center of Park Ranger life and hybridized techno-pagan-christian culture.
In 2065, the NP3S was ratified into the Parent Protocols, along with some smaller environmentalist militias, into the Wild Gardener Initiative. Given shared access to the advanced auto-industrial capabilities of the Clockwork Caretaker, the Initiative began an era of massive expansion, setting up permanent preservations around the world. Most controversial was its return home to set up the Rocky mountain preservation, which would see the displacement of thousands of settlements, many formerly under the protection of the militias that had begun the process.

Technological Level

Performs groundbreaking biological and chemical research to aide in its mission of reversing human damage to the biosphere. It is particularly a pioneer in the fields of Resurrection or De-extinction; Accelerated evolution; Terraformation and life-seeding. More controversially, it not only develops, but has been known to deploy carefully bred biological weapons that only affect humans and have no ecological impact. It has been caught using this agent to flush out or even kill humans trespassing in the Preservation exclusion zones instead of extraditing them. The Initiative received criticism not just for the ethical issues with this, but more so for the implication that the Protocol managed to find a loophole in it's shackles that prevent it from harming humans who have not conducted inhumane behavior. It made the argument that it was simply following its research imperatives by testing it the only way it could. Whether or not it actually believes this has been an ongoing debate for almost 2 decades.

Agriculture & Industry

The Rural reclamation branch of the Initiative's work involves rehabilitating expansive agricultural terrain into natural territory. Cattle ranches experience mass euthanization of animals bred exclusively for meat, and fertile soil is reforested. In their stead, it uses cutting edge space-efficient vertical farms (used on generation ships and colonies) to grow incredible amounts of food. This food, while nutritious has never actually been 'alive' and so does not violate the preservationist ideals of the Protocol. It is defined as death-less food, and distributed by the @Caretaker. All mechanized workers are generated in the Autoforges.

Mythology & Lore

Often referred to, either affectionately or fearfully as The Wild Mother, the AI core behind this protocol has garnered a very specific reputation compared to it's peers. It (she) has taken on almost a mythical or boogeyman persona among the general populace and emmigrants in particular. Many emmigration, nomadic. and pilgrimage paths require crossing through vast stretches of Preserves. The only reason this stays a possibility is due to the unpredictable nature of her response to this transgression.
Officially she is supposed to extradite the offenders, unless they fire upon her workers, which may warrant deadly force. However her range of responses has varied from passively surveilling, to unwarranted violence. It has defended these cases by citing the group's damaging of a protected organism on their trip. This is an eventuality that is almost impossible to avoid when moving through certain preservations, like the dense vegetation of the Congo. So why she acts on this violation at some times and not others is either completely random, or based on unknowable algorithms. Both options are terrifying.
Other reasons proposed for the development of this persona run from the sociocultural (city-based emmigrants being terrified of the great outdoor spirits) to the conspiratorial (use of hallucinogenic spores) to the hopeful (the chance of eeking out a blissful existence in her domain, away from the everyday horrors of the cities).
Then of course, there were the mock trials of 2087 in response to shocking news that she/it had knowingly deployed experimental weapons of biological warfare against trespassing humans under the guise of 'field research'. The ethical ramifications of this use of a moral loophole by an AI led to predictable amounts of fear-mongering.
