The Necronomicon

Bound in scraps of ancient leather, this ancient grimoire is as strange as it is mysterious. The book itself is mostly harmless, but the rumors sat that the knowledge contained within has been known to drive its readers mad. In reality, the knowledge itself does not drive anybody mad, rather the words of the book allow the reader to make connections that no mortal would normally be able to make, and those sudden realizations cause the reader to be driven to the brink of insanity, for within those cursed pages is the ancients truths of the Great Old Ones, their origins, their names, and the fact of their existence.

The original manuscript has been studied rather intimately by a few magical societies and individuals, and the truths within can be warded against as a result. However, due to the nature of the Great Old Ones and those who study them, the latent magic within the book curses the reader with a fate to always find out the truths contained within. The original book has been warded against scrying and teleportation magic, and it can never be placed in a pocket dimension without the permission of the Keeper of the Necronomicon.

The madness those who study this tome often cause them to desire to translate and transcribe the book. These books are of unknown quantities and most of them have not been accounted for. As a result, the raw magic connected to these books is more dangerous, often driving the readers mad themselves. These tomes are often sought out by cults of powerful entities, as they see these translations and transcriptions as a more true version of the Necronomicon, tempered by the madness of the transcribers.

The Book contains spells and rituals to contact, summon, and bind ancient entities. The most notable of these is a summoning spell for Great Old Ones. The spells contained are rather difficult, needing a high proficiency in Occult magic to even attempt to pull off. Be warned, these summoning rituals can summon long sleeping gods, whose mere presence can cause madness, let alone what their tampering can do.

Purpose

It was written with the intention of synthesizing information a world traveler, driven mad by his discoveries, needed to remove from his mind. In reality, the act of writing this book drove him further down a dark path he would never return from. He was devoured alive by invisible beasts in broad daylight in the city streets of ancient Damascus.
