On a Wizard's Magic, Including a Discussion on The Weave
A Wizard and their magic are one. Without magic, there would be no need for wizards, but without wizards, only extraordinary fellows would be able to touch magic, and even then magic could not be understood, simply wrangled into submission. Rather, wizards and their benefactors have delved deep into what magic means, how it works, and, most importantly, how to harness it to their will. To become a wizard, one must be committed above anything else, and they require training. The thing is, anybody can follow some instructions, draw some symbols on the ground, and chant some ancient words, but what a wizard does is so much more than that.
While anybody can cast a spell given time and the proper components, that is elementary magic, a wizard takes the magic into themselves, channeling certain spells through themselves in a moments notice. In this way, a wizard moves beyond the realm of the magician into the realm of true power, harnessing raw magic. A wizard is an expert at performing those rituals, but most of all they are experts at essentially "pre-casting" them at the beginning of the day, storing the energy within themselves for later use. This energy is harmless if properly handled, but a wizard must learn how to handle it, and that requires force of will. So, in a meta-game sense, a wizard's spell slots are essentially just that, the force of will that each wizard has, and as the wizard levels up, they are simply pushing the boundary of their mental capacity.
Now, The Weave is what makes up magic of this realm; The Weave is how magic flows through areas. The magic of the Pact Realm is pervasive, it effects everything, and that is due to The Weave. Wizards have been studying The Weave since they first rose to prominence, but little is known of its origin or of its design, but they do know how to tap it for immense power. The Weave is not naturally stronger or weaker in any particular location, but wizards have taken to shifting The Weave, doing more than just plucking the strings, they gather them together, binding them into chords, you could say.
